How can I get some advice on the right kind and level of shear pin protection for a PTO drive from a 40 hp tractor to a sawmill? Overriding clutches seem to protect in the other direction. My application is for a Belsaw mill. The PTO has a clutch, but I think I want separate protection. How large a pin? What kind of coupler would you recommend?

Take a look at a WD or WD45 Allis sometime. Way up where the pto shaft attaches to the 90 degree drive. They use a shear pin. I've broken them . I now use a bolt from the hardware store that is designed as a wagon axle. Works good.

I'm not sure that will work. I tried a tractor on a Bellsaw mill once years ago. I hooked up the driveline from a silo blower that already had shear-bolt protection built in. I "knew" I should hook up a lever so I could throw the PTO out from my position by the saw if I needed to stop the mill. But no, I was in too big a hurry to do it right. It wasn't long before I stalled the carriage and got the blade hot. I was fortunate enough to find a man who knew how to hammer tension back into the blade. But. Lesson learned. Be able to shut down your power.

I would try a flywheel from a junk baler.. Massey # 10 is basically by itself and all the pin protection you need...
