There's one of these coming up in an auction nearby. I just need one for a few acres, but don't know much about balers. Are these any good? Anything I should check for on it? Thanks.

Check the pin and bushing on the plunger, where the pitman arm connects. If the grease has been neglected here, major damage will result when the worn pin lets go. I had a used 336 that the previous owner hadn"t greased this fitting enough, probably because it was hard to reach. Pin wore the journal enough that the journal broke. Pitman hit the ground, lifted the baler off the ground, then flailed up and blew the door off the top of the baler, and got all bent up in the process. Plunger went into the bale chamber and wedged itself into the resistor grids. Luckily I got a rusted-up 336 for cheap that had the parts on it to fix the one that was destroyed, but it was a hard way to learn what to look for.

They are good balers. Most had a #30 ejector on them around here. lift the cover over the plunger crank and see if the safety pawl or what ever it's called is all beat up if so the gear box could have some damage to gear teeth. Happened to my 346 and I had to have a bull gear flown in from Ottumwa since I had hay down. The power shaft on the front of the gearbox is often bent some. Some more than others. A little bend doesn't seem to hurt it any.

we've had one since 1973.... only had major problem one time in 2000 and new knotter parts replaced the ones worn out...

sometimes it has problems changing balls of twine (the splice gets caught in the bill hooks)

but its been a good baler
