Sickle bolts vs rivets

Thinking about changing over to the bolts on my NH 450 and I will have to change the hold downs to the high clip,will this effect the hay falling off the sickle when the hay is short? I notice in short hay it slides along at the inner end of the bar where there is a high clip but don't know for sure if that is the problem. Does any body else run the bolt on sickles on their 450 or 451 NH mower? Thanks

I changed to the bolted sections several years ago. Never had a problem with them and replacing broken sections is easy. Only way to go.

If you know how to properly work with rivets you will never be happy with those damn bolts. I've used both and will never go back to bolts.

Trust me, having worked with sickle bar mowers for 30 years, you will not be sorry by changing over to bolts. I would never have rivits again even if it was cheaper. Steve

Question for Steve from New Holland:: are bolts the way to go instead of rivets? I need to replace several sections on my 7-ft Ford 515 mower, and am considering an entire knife to replace the original worn-out one. Don't the bolts get loose on sections?

I just changed them to the high ones on my 451. I cut some pretty short hay the other day 2-3" in spots. It didn't seem to have any problems clogging up. There was a little out on the end but it did'nt affect it as far as i could tell.

I think i can live with the results. grass was really dry so it did'nt seem to cut as clean, But i think it was just too dry. no rain in a long time and it was almost cured before i cut it.bermuda and pretty thin in spots ,actually more thin than thick.

I was running a rivited section in it at the time instead of a bolted one. I don't fore see any problems with a bolted section it ,it cut with a riveted section. the larger nuts may help keep the hay out better. I have even cut without the plug on the end. granted it does clog more.
