JD 555H plow

I haver the oppurtunity to buy a 555H 4x14 plow. According to the owner, it has all new parts and is field ready. He wants $1600. Is this good?

Answering you over here rather than the JD post. Rather than the JD model 555H, I would look for a 4-5 bottom model 66H or 77H to match the model 820 you intend to get. If it is the "black dash" later version, I would go for five. The heavy duty 7 series is more difficult to find. The 555 is a little light duty for the 820. A 666 or 777 would be OK but are newer.

What is so special about the 'black dash' version? and what is the difference...or is only the obvious the difference

The early "green dash" 820 had the same engine as the 80. Late version "black dash" 820 had the same engine used in the later 830. The plate around the gauges was changed from green to black paint, thereby the nomenclature, black and green dash. The "black" has approximately 10 more hp. But, anyone could use a little paint for an easy deception, faking a S/N is a lot more difficult.

Found it! In the beginning of the 1958 model year S/N 8203100.

By "All new parts" I suppose you mean all the wear parts for the bottoms. Does it have new tires and a hydraulic cylinder with it? Only you can decide if it is worth that much, but $1600!, I tend to agree with mjbrown. MHO

By all new parts, i mean new moldboards, landslides and points. I dont know about new tires, but according to the owner, the hydaulic cylinder and everything is complete and works. I never saw it personally. He also said he put new paint on it, etc. But that dont really mean a whole lot, does it?

With old parts on it I think it would be about $400 plow unless there is some sort of rarety I don't know about. I recently bought a 145H 4x16 semi mount for $400 with pretty worn parts and I'm not sure it was worth it. Plows nowdays are going for close to scrap price in the 4-5 bottom size. Not that many people plowing anymore.

I realize that not alot of ppl are plowing these days, but i also heard that JD plows are rare(r) than ones like IH, MH, etc. I would get it more for play than work (shows, competitions, etc) Plowing is also an art to do it really, really well. Thanks for your input.
