Good Flail Chopper?

Need a weed cutter, straw chopper AND spreader, load leaves, etc. Put it all together and I think a flail chopper would be the hot setup. Rotary movers just bunch things up, won't spread windrows, etc. I think it's New Holland, John Deere or Gehl and I don't think Gehl's going to be in the game for long as far as parts go. Anyone got advice? Thanks

I have a New Holland 38 crop chopper. It is an excellent machine and can be used as you plan by opening up the cover and just let the stuff fly out the back. You can even remove the auger if you desire. John Deere is the same basic machine. New JD is the 972.

We've got a junk gehl behind our barn. It was ok when it still ran, but it kinda fell apart in the last few years. We did use it on occasion just to cut weeds and the like, opening up the back cover. There are TONS of gehl's out there so used parts are easy to come by. We just don't green chop anymore so we haven't really cared much about fixing or replacing the old gehl.

Got an old JD 16A, a fencerow special, this summer. Opened up the back and took out the auger. Used it to cut grass hay until it broke down. Worked fairly well, but I lost quite a bit of the hay that I couldn't recover because it was shattered and blown back into the stubble. I'n looking at a chute on the back to catch the stuff as it flies out the back, and funnel it into a windrow of sorts, for next experiment. Did a nicer, cleaner job of cutting than a bushog, that I had been using. I was working in thick grass that would have been difficult with a sickle bar type mower. Took quite a bit of power - made my JD B grunt pretty hard. Would like to get one of Hay Dr's drum mowers for a trial run, but cost and availability have put me off.

we used to have a NH 38 crop chopper and they worked really well.they can be bought for less than 1000 on any given day most places(used like new)they don't spread that well though because it goes through a blower with the purpose of blowing into a feeder waggon for direct cutting of grasses.if that's ok with you, they work fine, phill

I've had a JD #10 for years that has been a rugged machine. If you are cutting hay for example for green chop better have some HP.
