Rear axle oil?

I have a 1969 Ford, model:3400, three cylindr gas tractor. The rear axle has a lot of water in it and needs to be replaced. The owners manual that came with it says to use "FORD M-2C53-A" type oil and the service manual says to use "FORD M-2C85-A" or "FORD M-2C77-A" type oil. My local parts store cannot tell me which is the correct oil to use, or what type of oil these are, {85/90 wt}? Would be real grateful for any help.

Thank you in advance for your time and help.

Rusty

Almost all fords use 134 I have a 1715 rear & trans have same sump , First thing make sure to flush rear to get all water out before adding anything , Check with dealer to find out what to flush with to keep form dammaging gears & bearings . If tractor uses same oil for hyd sys that will be major job .

Nh 134 compatable oil is the thing to use everywhere but the engine as mentioned. Some use thicker oil if they have seals leaking or a worn out pump - your call there.

It's this simple. Get yourself some NH 134D, or any Universal Tractor Fluid that meets the specifications of Ford/NewHolland 134D. That is the correct fluid for every compartment on your tractor save the engine. Tranny/hydraulics/rear axle and power steering all use 134D. There will be those who argue, but this is what most any NH dealer will tell you, and it will work fine. It may or may not be what is printed in your original operators manual.... but this is one of those recomendations they will give you that supercede what is printed in a 40 year old manual. HTH.

Does your tractor use the same oil in the hydrauic system as the rear axle? My 4610 is a newer model and it specifies Ford 134 type oil for the rear axle. The spec numbers you have don't mean anything to me. Your best bet is to find the nearest New Holland dealer and see what they tell you. I'm alsmost sure that the 134 oils superceded the spec you have but they ought to be able to tell you what to use.
