I"m looking at a used 18ft Vibrashank 45 cultivator. This is a tow-behind unit. No cylinder, tires are weather-checked, and about half of the shovels are bad. Pivots appear to be good. What"s a fair price to offer on something like this?

Any spring tooth on the back of the disk and the field cultivator saves passes across the field and makes a really nice seed bed.

I paid $500 for a 20' or so IH 45 with harrow (not attached) a few years ago in the middle of Iowa. I beat a neighbor with a much bigger operation by a few days at getting it. If I leave the wings folded down it stalls my gas 4020 which then digs holes.

Don't fall for the special not marathon field cultivator shovels from Shoup. They don't cut weeds except with the front two inches. The edges are blunt. Real marathon sweeps are much better at cutting weeds.

I've gone no til so I've quit using my IH-45. It may be up for sale in a year or two.

Its worth checking shanks for side play. If they've been replaced they will be tight, if they wobble like a drunken sailor, they will need to be repelaced and that gets fairly expensive, though shanks are available from Shoup, Sloan, and IH. Sometimes IH has a sale and beats both of those alternate sources.

Thanks Bob,

Been wonderin' if that wouldn't work. A heck of a lot cheaper than me havin' to buy a rod-weeder too.

Now, if I can just find those darned harrows. :>)

I sold mine for $150. The shovels were OK but far from new. Paint fair. It also had a 4 bar Remingler harrow. In this area these go for scrap, too unwieldy to move back East where they can bring more. Good paint and almost new shovels with a good harrow at best isn't worth more than $300-400.

Around here you can buy one with brand new sweeps for just a few hundred bucks and most end up as scrap metal. We had an 18' model that we ran for several years until the axle broke, we still have it but it's awaiting a visit from the gas axe. In their day they were a top of the line machine but they are a little light for alot of today's uses and they don't handle lots of residue real well.

Mornin',

Bought this one set up on 6" centers last spring to handle my summer fallow.

After pulling it for a season, you couldn't get it away from me at gun-point. Just an excellant machine and they do a super job!

Michael: I bought a new 18' vibra shank in the early 70s. They do good work but have one downfall, the pivots on each shank wear out much too quickly. There is a solution to this, replace all the shanks with modern large S tine. It will cost about $20. per shank, including point, but that is still about 20% of the cost of new vibra shanks. The S tine will stand more speed than vibra shanks.

If you can buy it for around $600., use it as is until shanks start breaking, then change it to The large S tines, designed to clamp on the 2.5" tool bars. You see a lot of that being done here. You'll have to change all at the same time as depth will be different on the two shanks. You'll very likely be able to sell any decent vibra shanks.
