Woods 315 batwing sheer bolt

I have a Woods batwing bushhog and I believe the model to be a 315. I keep breaking the sheer bolt that connects the drive line behind the second U joint from the tractor. There is a space for two pieces of key stock and a hole for the bolt. The grooves that the keys go in appears to be tapered. Small on the bottom and larger on top. Are these supposed to be this way or is it just wear. I had never seen one with this much difference between the top and bottom. My second question is what grade of bolt should I be running in the driveline? I have been using a number 5 but they continue to break after about 4 to 5 hours of use. It is always at the same point on the driveline. I have visually inspected it numerous times and do not see anything binding, rubbing etc. Any thoughts wold be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Having been a Woods dealer back when the 315 was made I know exactly what you are having a problem with. You need to have a spiral roll pin to hold the yoke on the shaft. What is happening is the PTO shaft is binding up and in not free to telescope and move there where the jack shaft is located. You may have some worn or bent parts in the jack shaft mount causing the mount to bind and break the pin holding on the yoke.

Hay DR since you were a woods dealer maybe you can help me.I have a 315 batwing great mower long as you don't turn,and when you do it shakes and chatters at the u-joints as if they are out of line-I've tried different lengths on the draw bar tried different tractors and have broken two pto shafts on my IH 756 when the pin breaks either at the first or second joint-I use haybalers -other bush hogs and pto items and no problem only the batwing---help

If I understand you right that does not sound like a shearbolt to me. I have not seen a shear bolt used with a keyway like you describe.

Your spots for the key ways should be equal top and bottom. Are you puting the key ways in when it comes apart if not that will put a lot of stress on the one little bolt. Also check to see if your shaft is silding back and for easily you may need to grease it up good. I wood not use any more than a grade 5 bolt. Also are your slip clucthes slipping?

Everything is lubricated and I have been replacing the keyways each time. Someone told me that there is such a thing as a tapered keyway so I guess I'll call the Wods dealer today and ask him. I had never seen one before. I don't know if the bolt is designed to sheer or not. It's purpose is to hold the two shafts together. I guess I would rather break a bolt than U joint. Thanks for the responses!
