Vermeer 504I Round Baler

Can a Vermeer 504I round baler that has a spiral lower roller be updated with later components to come close to a late 504 Super I silage baler? What changes can/should be made? Thanks in advance for your comments.

Yes your bale will bale Haylage as is. You can add the Hydraulic tension if you want too but the baler will work fine with the standard spring tension. My personal preference is to bale haylage with the standard plastic build-up knife and not to install the steel one used on the silage baler. You need to advance the pickup timing for the heavier crop but that is easy to do on the left hand side of the pickup.

Thanks for the suggestions. Do you agree that the 1 1/2 in. vs. 1 1/4 in. lower roller bearing diameter is a major limiting factor, too?

If you baler has the spiral starting roller you have the 1 1/2" lower drive roller and likely the 1 1/2" upper drive roller as well. You can tell the difference in looking at the bearing flanges. The 1 1/2" bearings have square flanges and the 1 1/4" bearings have triangle flanges. The spiral roller has 1 1/4" shafts but there is no pressure on the spiral starter roller.

I want to thank you and 504 Baler Guy for saving me a whole lot of time and effort. I was considering a 504I that was coming up for auction. The info you provided helped me ask the baler's owner the right questions. He had used the baler for silage, but had to make quite a few repairs. It turned out that even though it had a spiral roller it also had the 1 1/4 inch roller shafts. Perhaps it was made during the change over in manufacture. I will keep looking. Thanks again!

The first owner likely had a 504I and replaced the square starter roller with a spiral roller AK update kit. 504 Super I and 504-IS balers came with the 1 1/2" drive rollers and a spiral starter roller standard. Also the 1993 and later Super I balers came with the wide outside belts.

There were several different configurations of the 504I before the Super I. The fact that it has the spiral roller means that it was a latter one. If it has 1 1/2" drive roller bearings you could probably make it happen. If it has 1 1/4" no.
