Got "em measured today before the rain hit. The coulters are 15 inches in diameter. They may have been 16 at one time but we"ve plowed a lot of flinty/rocky ground since then. Hope this helps, holler if you need something else.

Thanks MF for info and trouble, went to implement type junkyard and scavenged up a MF coulter, dia. 15"
everything was frozen up,but took it apart and got it rolling again....wobbly though..
Put it on back or outside plow( in front of tailwheel) and the other two (12" in dia.) on other two plows...
Talked to tractor parts dealer and he keeps the shares in stock....
also went on ebay and bought a parts manual for the MF62...
I also have a few of the John Deere...The Operation,Care and Repair of Farm Machinery...They are really great little books..
the Manual for the MF62Moldboard Plow is also great, as far as laying out a field to plow and different ways...
Was impressed about plowing a furrow across the headland on both ends, so when your rear tires hit the ridge, you can raise or lower your plows and so get all your furrows the same length....
Anyway thanks again, I really appreciate it...Mike

I apologize for not getting the coulters measured, I will try again tomorrow. I'm not sure that I've ever "done it right" but the end result looked good anyway. It helps to have a good, unsprung plow, good shares, good hitch, and a strong enough tractor to pull it. For me there are three primary adjustments: 1) Right side tractor wheels, 2)lift arms/plow crank, and 3)the top link. Yes, sometimes you will pull your hair out trying to get them all just right. Old sod makes it even more aggravating. I haven't read the manual for the 62 but I think it's similer to the 82. At least that's a starting point. Sod not rolling over can be speed or adjustment due to the type of sod, the plow isn't leveled enough Left and Right. A larger furrow at the front then getting smaller towards the back could be the top link or plow crank(which I don't know if the 62 has one, the 82 does). You may want to use the search feature at the top of page here and the "tractor Talk" forum for "plowing" to see what's in the archives, especially 'Allan in NE' has some neat pics plowing with good discussion too.

Have info on the 82 series, the 62 is a little lighter in construction. Post the real question you want answered, maybe we can help.

Well one question I have is about the coulters..the plows (three bottom,14")only has 2 coulters and they are about 12" in diameter....This seems to be a bit small...but by measuring from the bolt to the upright..there is just about room for a 16" coulter...
I have the owners manual for the 62model and all it says is 16" or 18"....
I have a complete coulter taken off of another set of plows?....but the stem rod is too big for the clamp.....
I used to have a set of 4-bottom mf 16" trip type plows....Model 82?...
downgraded tractors to a 45HP(pto) one and so I went with a set of 14"ers....(3-bottom)..beam type....
plows are in great shape, except for coulters and maybe the spring on the tail wheel.....
hope this helps...Thanks Mike

Mike, What "may" have happened is that they wore down to 12" by plowing in rocky soil. Some take the front coulter off because it interferes with the lift arm. That 4 bottom was probably an 82 if it had the big extension plate at the end of the long beam. I"ll measure the 82 coulter size tomorrow and report back. In some crops/soils you don"t need a coulter some say. About any that will fit will work, it won"t matter much if they"re a different diameter, just adjust to get the depth of cut you want.

Thanks, Thought about the wearing down bit...but could they wear from 16" to 12"?....and both are the same...
I have several acres to plow(25+) and its an old growed up farm...last plowed before 1980...

Checked on the spring on tail wheel and it is in good shape...also bearing is fine....shares are ok, don't think there is going to be a problem there...
Didn't know about removing the one coulter...
but do think that I would be better with all three..
I've done a lot of plowing through the years in different soils and with different plows And never did know how to do it right!.
sometimes would do ok,but mostly up and down, into the soil and out..plowed part falling back into furrow..etc.....really hard to disc up nice..
This was before the internet...and most farmers didn't know how to plow right either....(in my area)....so I appreciate your info....
Mike
