I"ve got an old hay elevator with 6.00 x 16 tires that have dry rotted. What"s the new size that"s comparable?

tractor supply carries the front tractor tire that is 6 x 16. Just bought a pair for $150

I had the same problem on some old running gear I have. Tires were so rotten that when I aired them up, the tubes split the tires! Couldn't afford new, so I managed to find some 235/70/R16's that went on nicely. Got them for free. Go to the local tire place and ask if they have any "take offs" they SHOULD let you have them for real cheap. They will work fine if you have the side clearence. Otherwise, they still make the 6.00 x 16 tires new.

depends on the width of the rim, if they are the 3-1/2 to 4-1/2" the new sizes probly will not work but if the rims are the 5-6" they will work, Just picked up a set of 4 for free at the tire store of the 215-85RX16 size and they look to be the same size as the old 7:50X16 tires are and the rims I want to put them on are I think 6" rims so will work OK for me but I have other rims that they are two narrow they will not work on. Anouther option is the throw away spare from some pickups (midrange in year Chevy S10 + I would think others) and would be bore the size of a 5:50X16", I have a few on here and they will work with those narrow wheels. Can't think of the size now but if you want me to check what size they are let me know. The lower the second number the wider the tires are and the worse foe putting on an old rim, stay away from any 60 series and 70 series are two wide for most of the old rims on the smaller machinery including a lot of wagons, best size to find ia an 85 series as they are more equal in height to width like the old 6:00 to 7:50 tires were, some of the temp spares are like that while others are the wide flat size and are no good for machinery.

The middle number in a 235x75 R16 is not the width of the tire, the 235 is. The tire would be 235 MM wide, and the 75 is the profile of the tire. The smaller the number, the shorter the side wall. That's why a 235x85 is taller than a 235x75.

If I'm remembering right from my high school auto class, the 75 would be a percentage of the width, meaning that the tire's sidewall is 75% the width of the tire.

Don't quote me on that part though because I'm not completely sure, but I'm sure google would turn up something with a search.

I can't say we've got a whole lot of narrow 16" rims around our place, but those we do have around have older 7.50-16 truck tires on. I've found that the newer 235X85's are pretty close in size, and the older rims just make the tire's tread balloon out a little and make it a rounder tread. Not really a problem for a hay wagon or other farm implements. I wouldn't advise it on a car or truck though.

I don't dought your figures. Just know when I had a 6:00X16 go bad on corn picker I had a 215-60RX16 and put on a 4" wide rim, tire was 2" wider on both inside and out of rim than rim width and realy bulged and was about 2" smaller diameter than the old 6:00X16. If you do not need the same height (Made picker set lopsided) I did need the height and do not have too much load on to flaten the sidewalls to the point of breaking the bead or busting out the sidewall then you can get by. His elevator would probably not be heavy enough for the busting out problem but if he only put one on one side with a taller tire on other side could cause the elevator when raised to full height to fall over. Just a tire of same size both sides with one blowing out could cause same thing with elevator falling over. We all have to think safty.

Your memory and math have served you well. The only thing I would add is that the 235 mm is the width of the tire at it's widest point which the sidewall bulge not the tread width as is assumed by many.

And Dach if you come to my tire shop and ask for a 215/60R16 for a farm implement I would sell it to you for $5. And I might even put it on for you if the wheel is wide enough and not too rusty.

Sounds about what we pay for take-offs, unless we can get some for free off either our own truck or some body else's. I've got my eyes on a couple 16" tires on the work truck right now, they're gonna need to replace them before winter....

Same thing with the 235-75R15's on my truck...
