Need to know what equipment is available for a retiree to spread lime and/of flue ash. They are not any commercial spreaders in my area. Total acres is about 35. We used something called an EZ-FLOW or something like that when i was growing up in the early 50's.

Anyone ever hear of, or use a pickup mounted sand spreader, like you use to sand roads, for spreading lime? Just curious, but it would probably work,at least on pasture or hay fields.

You can still pick up the kind of spreader you talking about used cheap. Mine is a J.D., I use it for fert. and lime. In my area those big spreader trucks couldn't get over our feilds. Trying to use the three point hitch type only makes a mess with lime. With the old drop type you can tell exactly where you put it, same with fert. Good luck Jeff

I actually have a JD Van Brunt spreader also, but I don't see any on auctions around here, all been scrapped out years ago. Go for it if the guy can find one in usable condition, works great. :)

Bob, I bought an E-Z_Flow spreader last winter for $100 and it is in excellent shape. It's about 8-9 feet wide on full size implement spoked tires. It's just a drawbar pulled drop spreader that I used behind our Case VAC. Worked great for about 3 acres, of course, I only had about a ton of lime to put out so it only took 2 fillings and about an hour's time. For your 35 acres, I wouldn't do it. I think I'd rather have a dealer to that much.

Most ag coops & fertilizer dealers here in the midwest have them to rent - takes a good sized tractor to pull as they are big. I would start there, as there aren't many small units made any more. Otherwise you need to find something old at an auction sale. I don't think the 3-point spreaders work very well for lime etc., but others might have actual experience with some brands that do work for this.

I think it is Vicon that has a 3-pt spreader than can handle lime well. Their spreader has an agitator/force feed and that shaker tube thing on the back, if I remember correctly. I think I'll go look to see if there's a website.
