sickle bar mower question

I have been looking for a used sickle bar mower to maintain my drainage ditches but I have not found one that will cut on an angle up to 45 degrees below horizontal. Some models that I�ve looked at will angle slightly below horizontal but not that much. Can someone tell me which make and models will angle downward more than 15-20 degrees? Most of the ditches are a 3 to 1 slope but go up to 1 to 1 in some areas. I have to cut them from the top side since I am unable to drive down in the ditches. A 9 foot bar will cut all of them to the bottom of the ditch. I will settle for a 7 or 8 foot unit if the 9 is not available. Thanks

Short answer to your question is, I don't know.

my MM UM-5 does that very well. The 45 upward might be stretching it, but 35-40 degrees is no problem.

A Deere 350 (3-point version), or 450 (trailing version) will do what you want, and is available in 7' or 9' versions.

Hydraulic mid-mount setup in reply to Tom in VA, 09-08-2006 04:25:59

The old road mower hydraulic setups will do what you want but they require a high volume hydro pump to run the drive motor and have a very unwieldy mounting system. The newer(that being a relative term) belt driven (pitman-less) rearmount sickles should be able to handle a 45* downslope but I have never run one so I am not sure about how far down one will actually work.

The mid-mount hydraulic setup on mine will drop down a little more than 45* but it could conceivably work at 90* down. The limiting factor is the geometry of the mount and the length of the raise cylinder. They are the trick for keeping ditch, stream, and pond banks clean.

The IH 100? that I have will mow down to about 45
degrees for cutting road ditches.

Most mowers are lifted with a cable so you can lenghten the cable to do what you want.

But remember they will not lift as high then.

So if you can change the throw on the cylinder in some way to cause more travel on the cable it will do both (raise high and drop low).

Also you can only do this with belt driven sickels.

What about one of the IH balanced head mowers? Can't remember their spec on down angle, but it is a linkage thing, not a problem with the cutting mechanism. It may be possible to modify the lift linkage to allow a lower cutting angle. 9 foot bars were available and are common where I live. Great mowers
