Picked up a used 3 point 6 foot rotary Howse mower and the thing doesn"t cut worth a dang. Sharpened the blades but it seems it pushes more over than it cuts. Was wondering if my old 2 cylinder John Deere was spinning it fast enough or maybe I"m doing something else wrong. My John Deere 207 pull type mower cuts great.

i bought a new 5 ft. howse and it was pure junk! the gear box bolts came loose the 2nd time i used the cutter. the deck was thin metal that seemd to 'wobble' when getting into high grass. traded it for another brand. several years ago i bought another howse cutter...a 6 ft for my ford 4000 and it has been the best cutter i ever bought used. solid as a rock and not a bit of vibration under load. also a very heavy duty gearbox. sometime there is good ones and sometimes there is bad ones. goes for any brand.

After making sure the blades are not upside down, make sure they are rotating in the correct direction. I have a 6' Howse that cuts great no matter the tractor speed or the PTO speed. Also make sure the blades are free swinging. Mine sometimes "freeze" up during the off season due to grass, twine, rust, etc. aroung the blade bolts. I raise it up on its side and oil and free up the blades.

I second the idea of double checking the blade position...I bought a Woods rotary cutter a while back, the blades were on upside down...and backwards.

1000 rrm pto shafts have different splines and are generally made to noncompatable with 540 equipment.
My buddy Kieth had a Howse that he bought used but in near new condition that would not cut worth two dead flies. May sound stupid but it took us a heap of head scratching to figure out that the blades were on up side down (easy to do on a howse) and was trying to cut with the dull side of the knife. Works good now behind his 641 Ford.

I have a 5 ft.Howse bush hog mower that cuts really good.Maybe you are pulling it too fast for it to cut properly.Other than that or as you stated maybe it not being turned fast enough I don't know what the problem would be.I'm really happy with mine.

I pulled it as slow as the tractor would go with the throttle all the way up. I saw where some tractors had a 1000 RPM pto Could this mowert be set up for that instead of my 540?

I would think it would say on the mower or in the operator"s manual what PTO RPM it needs.
