I have been ordering thing for a tractor from some reputable dealers. One item was like a 10 penny nail..2" long with a couple of ridges in it for a tach drive. Price was 9.95 plus 8.50 shipping and handling?? It did not weigh over 3/4 of a lb. Another was brake pads...4# 14.00 dollars..I have shipped parts and things all over the USA and it usually cost 1.00 a pound. I like to make money too..but gee whiz. Next time I guess I have to do some rippin. Not really.

REALLY UPSET!!!!!

What gets me is when something is priced at a certain amount, then shipping and handling are added, then postage is put on top of that. the shipping and handling should be included in price of item, and then just the postage added so you only have to add up two figures to get the total instead of all three figures and this is for companys that do all there bussiness by mail so they know what shipping and handling are every time and there is no difference in total price of each item if you buy 1 item or a dozen, the shipping and handling stays the same for each item, you could put all 12 of the items in the same package as just the one item but no break on the shipping and handling so that and the price of the item should be added together before quoteing a price with postage depending on actuall costs

OK just today I had a customer call me and demand to know "where's my order?"! I remembered our phone conversation from 2 weeks previous and dug around in the trash can for his work order which I found. My reply to him was like this. Sir I spent ten minutes on the phone with you and explained everything about what I would supply to you and quoted you a price. This price was plus $15.00 shipping. If memory serves me correct, you became quite agitated and told me I was crazy and that you would not pay any more than $7.00 for shipping. He then stated "that is correct" I then stated that it would likely cost more than the $15.00 in postal charges alone to ship this.
He then said in a not to friendly manner "if you can't ship it for $7.00 DON'T SHIP IT!" and he slammed the phone down. I dropped the work order in the trash can as I hung the phone up.
After I explained this he still said he wouldn't pay more than $7.00 for shipping. I said Good luck and have a nice day and I hung up the phone. Bad business? maybe, but I don't need that kind of business. It was because of people like this guy, that my wife now will not answer the business phone or take orders.

imho If a company always sells over the net or by phone and all items are shipped. Why is not the labor and packaging materials part of the cost of the part ? The actual shipping costs are another matter as they depend on where you are having it shipped and by what method.
I think some sellers on ebay make all their profit off the shipping and handling charges. You see the lower price on ebay or elsewhere and decide to buy the part/item without considering the shipping and handling costs.

Now companies that normally sell in person at a retail establishment IE my CNH dealer will also ship and it is proper for them to charge enough shipping and handling charges to cover the added expense of shipping a part to you.

I wasnt going to say anything but..... I undstand both side of this issue here. Yes with gas prices and packing materials it is a bargen some times to pay $15 for a $3 item. But, why is it one guy can ship an item for $5 and the next guy will charge you $15 for the same size and wieghted item?? You cant say that is not price gouging.....

I have to disagree. Example, my dad is retired, he straighens nails as a hobby (seriously). When he sells something on ebay, he doesnt charge anything to box it up, drive it to town, and ship it. Me, I sell something, either me, or one of the guys working on the farm for me has to box it, take it to town, and stand in line to ship it. I know that they cost me $10.00 an hour plus benefits and I figure that Im worth at least what they are per hour.

I sold some stuff for 99 cents a few times and charged a dollar a pound shipping. Lost my shirt. No more, not a single person has to buy a single thing from me. Hay, my cows can eat if it doesnt sell. Parts, they melt them down for China every day if they dont sell.

I'll take really tired side of this one. First I work for a place that ships stuff so I've got a little experience. First when these mail order companies ship stuff they don't go search all around the shop for a box that will work- they order boxes in bulk and get a good deal on all their shipping supplies much better than what an individual gets when they buy the stuff at staples or the post office. Second when they ship so much stuff they get a discount. The more they ship the more they save. Third yeah, if you went to get it you could go only so far on 15.00 bucks for gas. But two further points: That box didn't take up room on the UPS/Fed ex truck and didn't cost the company hardly anything to ship and the second point it wasn't like the shipping company made one special trip to his town. Most likely the shipping company made several stops in the area so in the same way people will join a coop op for savings people have something shipped that can't pick up that doesn't mean people want to get ripped off. Also when you see a company charge you a surcharge on fuel for delivery- Thats where the shipping company really makes the money.

I don,t mind paying for shipping on parts I need or items that are too far for me to drive. But what gets me is when I have to order a part from the tractor store and they charge me for the part and for shipping, thats ok. But When they charge me again to ship it too me. I have asked before " Why don't you just ship it straight to my door?" It would save me at least $15.00 each time, not includeing the extra shipping time. The response I have received, and still sometimes here, is "we will inspect the item for damages", although the box is never opened. Needless to say I try to stay away from companies doing that to me anymore.

The other thing to remember is that, as a consumer, you (and I) pay for EVERYTHING in the long run so it is really how it is split out not necessarily how much.

OK Go out in a farmers field after harvest and glean an ear or corn. Carefully husk the ear and wrap it for shipping (I don't want any kernals broken off). Now mail it to me and I will send you $2.20 (you said you could ship for a dollar a pound and the 20 is for goodwill) And that gives you a dollar for the corn (which you have nothing invested in) OK now do the math. How many ears can you prepare and ship in an 8 hr day? How much income do you need to keep grocerys on the table, motgage pmt etc? You tell me how much you need for shipping. I'm serious, I'll send you the money for the corn to teach a lesson.

You didn't step on my toes. The way I figure it shipping is a bargain. If I can buy an item online, don't have to drive to town, don't have to wait in line etc etc etc. My time is valuable and having an item shipped in just makes good sence.

where ever it is the item you want, get in your car and drive there and see what it really costs. see if you can get there for what little you paid in shipping..Make sure you take the diesel pickup for a real good education.

I've often wondered what people are thinking when it comes to shipping costs myself. I have a small business of making stainless exhaust components for antique and regular tractors and I regularly ship out by the U.S. Postal service. At the time of ordering I quote a shipping price and regardless of what it costs, that's the price the customer pays. 9 times out of 10 I end up quoting a little low and I pick up the balance, nobody ever says thanks. But let me charge a buck too high and they are on my 800 number (at my cost) complaining. Another couple of incidentals that the complainer doesn't consider. Shipping materials average cost per muffler $3. Time spent packing 10 minutes at $35 per hour= $3.50, Transport to the post office at $.50 per mile $3.00 Time out of the shop to make the trip to the post office 1/2 hour at $35.00= $17.50. You paid $15.00 shipping. The post office charged Say $14.00
actual cost to ship $40.00
you paid $15.00 My cost to ship $25.00
Boy wouldn't a howl go up if I quoted a shipping and handling charge of $40.00!
I many cases thankfully I have several items to go to the post office so I can save some there.
Most people don't consider costs beyond a $.39 stamp.

Companies that ship as their main business have better shipping deals with carriers, and do not need to drive to town with each box going out. The UPS/ Fedex trailer is sitting outside, only takes a few minutes to run the cart full of boxes out a few times a day.

Any business paying $35 an hour to people boxing up stuff deserves to lose money. Or not steal mine. Forget it, don"t even want to try to discuss that stupidity.

Now, if you are a one-person specialty store making a pretty rare part, you make your money on the item, shipping is irrelevent other than a token.

I get your point, but it does not pertain to a company selling mail order, & selling $8 widgets weighing an ounce. It doesn"t cost $40 to pack & ship such a thing. Doeswn"t cost $14 either. They are just getting extra money.

A big problem comes about because most folks think of shipping costs as only what ups or usps charges for actual shipping. Packing material such as bubble wrap or styrofoam, boxes, tape, and insurance are often ignored. I buy a lot of things (coins mostly)on ebay. Often I have to pass up a real bargain because someone wants to stick it to a buyer on shipping. I have sen a coin cost 8.00 yet the shipping/ins for that single coin run 12-14 bucks. I won"t pay it!

The thing that amazes me is that I quote a cost up front, no suprises to the customer. Unlike some of the sleaze on fleabay. I generally will not bid on something on fleabay unless there is a flatrate shipping cost listed or the shipping calculator is activated. When I list something on fleabay, I include a flatrate cost generally about 15 bucks. But I've had a few that went as high as 20 bucks for shipping, but I still stuck to the 15 dollar figure.

$15 - $20 shipping at $3.00 a gal for gas will probably get you 100 miles round trip. So if you get something in Florida and you live in North Dakota for $15 shipping, I would say ship it in a heart beat. You just keep doing what you are doing and it will be fine..... ....
