Hi Everyone, my brother has an IH8420 Round baler (same as Hesson 530) and he is having problems with it not starting to form the bale. Instead it will plug up. Last year he replaced the belts but did not buy them from IH, he bought them from a belting company and says they are not as rough on outside as original IH belts.

Has anyone expienced the same problem? Do you have a solution.

Thanks
JB

I had a 530 some years back. Found out real fast if cutting with a mower and the hay wasn't crimped, mine would do the same as you mentioned. Once I got a hay conditioner that problem went away.If the hay has been crimped it'll bend and help srat the roll faster. It was real bad on oats and wheat. Would often break the short chain that turns the square roller. If he's conditioning the hay then look at the belts.

The original equipment belts were Mini-Rough top belts. You can also use the Chevron belts for extra traction. Hesston purchases their belting from Legg & Goodyear (Made in the USA). You do not have to purchase belts from Hesston to get the OEM quality belts. We sell the 2 ply Legg Mini-Rough Top belts for $85 each, delivered if you purchase 2 or more belts.
You might try relacing one of the old belts to the same length as the new belts and putting it in the center. We've also had customers purchase 2 Chevron belts ($105) and place them on the outside to help with hard starting.

I have a 8420, It could be a few different things. Is the hay good and dry? If it is too wet it will plug up. How are the pick up teeth? I had a problem with mine early this year not starting a bale, I had a quite a few teeth missing...replaced them made a REAL difference. You also need to take your time when starting the bale, don't crowd to much in the pick up at a time. I like to pull the tourqe back on my 400 start the bale untill it spins and then throw the tourqe ahead and go. Hope this helps

Thank you for your replies. Yes, hay is good and dry, the only difference this year is we had a lot of rain early in the haying season and the ground was damp and consequently the bottom of the windrow was also a little damp.

I will pass along to my brother.
Thanks

Like the previous poster mentioned, any too much moisture at all and you'll have a hard time getting a bale started, at least that is how my Hesston baler is.
