NOS question

"N.O.S." as in "New Old Stock", not Nitrous Oxide System.

I was always under the impression N.O.S. referred to parts in "New" condition, not used and in good condtion, but actually unused.

I was looking at photo ads and saw several J.D. heads advertised as N.O.S. that clearly had been installed and used - combustion chamber coated with carbon.

Am I missing something here?

Yup..."New-Old-Stock"...but one other point of contention: If advertised as NOS, it should also be and OEM part. I love seeing advertisements on eBay indicating NOS, and then it's an aftermarket part. Wrong! It's not NOS then.

I believe it actually stands for New Original Stock meaning that the part was produced the same years that the vehicle or tractor was produced and came out of the factory at the same time as the parts that produced the tractor. If advertized as such the part should never have been used and in most cases if it is a smaller part, it should still be in the original box or have a tag on it.

Thanks fellas. At least I'm not alone in my thinking.
If the seller is mislead in his understanding of the term NOS, that is one thing. On the other hand, if it is intended defraud...

The seller lives about 15 miles from me - I emailed him asking basically the same thing I asked here. His reply was not real nice.

Out of curiosity, what kind of reply did he give you...just trying to imagine what kind of jerk would advertise a well used item, and say it's NOS.~brad

Rick, when I was messing with early V8 Fords, NOS meant new stock that had sat in a warehouse or on a service garage shelf, thus it was old stock but "new " in that it had never been used. I still think of NOS as new old stock(never been used, old and stored a long time. I think that differentiates it from "USED". To my way of thinking if something has been used it is just that..Used. If they said OEM, they are referring to original equipment manufacturer, which could be new or used..my opinion..Mike in Exeter Ontario

N.O.S.--New Old Stock, means the same thing whether you are talking about antique/classic tractors, cars and trucks, or motorcycles. The part may have been manufactured at the same time as the vehicle, or it may have been manufactured later as a replacement part, but it would have been made by the original maker, and it would not have ever been installed.

Thank you to everyone.
I happen to lean on the side of Rusty FA, however there is one common theme here..."it has never been installed".
In this case, that is the pertinent part.

What a shame that a few people make the rest of us have to live in a "Buyer Beware" marketplace.
