Can a Ford 501 sickle bar mower be used to cut a levee or will it only cut in the horizontal position? If not what would be a good mower for a Ford 631 or a 851D? thank you

541 is a pitless mower will mow about 70% up mand 45% down they go for about $1700 around here there ar other brands on the market that will do the same job .

I cut the road ditches and along the county ditch with the 501. Never had a problem. But there is a limit to the angle you can have between the tractor & the bar. I'm not sure what exactly you will experience with your levee.

It's only made for "flat" cutting. Ford made a good "pitmanless" or (belt drive) unit, model 511 (I think). IH made great belt drive mowers. Most of the 7' mowers will work on eother tractor and a longer one will also work on your 851. Check around for them at auctions and for sale adds. They tend to be pricey, but you can find them out there for cheap, if you look. BIL found 2 IH 1300 's last year, guy wanted $50 a piece. Idiot only bought one and nevr would call the guy back for the other (I NEED it).

515 was their belt drive mower. you come across them once in a while, but quite a range in prices, i've seen a good one bring 200 at auction, and one similar $1K at a dealer.

They are only used for pretty much horizontal. You will need a belt drive pitmanless one.
