just got a side delivery rake and am not totally sure how to set it up. it's a new holland model 55. i tried it out a little bit and in some thicker hay (i'm mowing road ditches) it would slid and not rake the hay. one of the tires is pretty warn, basically bald, the other not too bad. i did raise the rake a couple cranks on the handle and that seemed to help some so i must have been digging too deep. it is missing a few teeth that i need to get replaced, but will the tires have that much affect on this thing?

If it has a place for a hydro cylinder to raise and lower, put one on. I put one on my JD rake and boy what a difference in the ditches. If you dig to deep or have it to high, just hit the remote.....

Hi Cody, I don't know if it's right or not but I adjust my Oliver 207 so I can slide a finger between the lowest tooth and the ground at each end of the basket with the basket tilted all the way forward more often than not . That's what seems to work best for me anyway though it's a different brand of rake . I figured out this weekend that I've been pulling my rake to fast . It works MUCH better at about 2 mph than 4-5 mph . I keep forgetting that it's a old rake . Takes twice as long but I don't have many acres and it was calming since I was pretty wound up this past week . I pulled it with a IH-M half throttle in 1st gear . I'm just guessing that's about 2 mph more or less . Experiment . Good luck ...Randy

My 55 has a bald tire & a mostly bald snow tire on it, as well as one dog was shot for a couple of years so was basically a one-wheel drive. It worked ok even then, tho would skid the baldy in conditions when I shouldn't have been raking anyhow..... (I have fixed the dog issue.)

So, I suspect you have the teeth too low into the dirt - crank it up;

Or something is not right - bent teeth binding on the basket, bad bearing, or other problem causing it to not turn easily & smoothly. (Ignoring such problems quickly gets costly...)

You should be able to sit in the field, turn the rake by hand & it doesn't knock into the ground, turn freely & very easily without hay on it - a good hard spin on a pipe should almost give you revolution without problems. If there is much resistance, crank it up higher or fix what is wrong.

If you have any tire chains available, that would take care of any bald tire problem.

Allen,

will "tipping" the basket allow it to get under the hay better if it's thicker? is that what your referring to?

Yes Sir,

I like the bottom of the basket or the contact teeth "leading" the machine.

Say,You're not working this hay "too wet" are ya? That too will let it "roll" underneith itself.

no the hay is dry, it was down for two days, it's grass hay and it was 85 both days, just had some weeds that were in it here and there that might have been a bit green but not bad. i'm gonna try to adjust the basket tonight and see what happens, might have to bug ya more about it if i can't figure it out.

Cody

Our NH rake has bar tires that are in pretty good shape.

They never slide, but I don't let the rake hit the ground either.

When setting the height you should be able to still spin the rake by hand to check how close to the ground you are.

You can only spin the rake backwards if it is in gear.

If it doesn't turn by hand fairly easily you may have other problems.

Jon,

Two things. You can "tip" that basket forward and/or back to suit your work. Also, get it up out of the soil. Teeth shouldn't even touch the ground; just the hay.

Hey! Would you be interested in an IH spinner? Thinkin' pretty seriously 'bout a 5-bottom Massey on-land spinner. Darned things just simply pull easier. :>)

I beleive I will pass on the spinner.

Besides I don't think the Explorer will handle the load home.

Why don't they put coulters on all the bottoms on those there plows.?

I bet it would pull easier with them.

Pinged you back

Hi Randy,

This sized plow on a dealers lot would run an easy $2500 used. Just like anything else tho, when they're new they are priced clear out of sight. A new 4 bottom Massey will run in at about $6K.

I bought this one a year ago from over in Wyoming; gave the fellow $700 for it.

Allan
