I am confused about the difference between a semi-mount, lift, and a pull-type mower. More specifically, are there front wheels, or skids (on which type)?...and why would anyone want to flatten the grass before the blades pass over it? If not ignorant, I at least have a misconception.
Thank you for any and all input.

Any wheels or shoes to the front of a sickle mower would roll on the last pass. That is why sickle mowers have swath boards - to leave a space for the shoe and wheel. Like you said, you don't want to drive over the crop before cutting it.

My FIL just bought a semimount JD MX10 rotary mower. You can buy them in pull, full mount, and semi mount. Pull hooks to the drawbar and lifts with rigid mounted wheels on a rockshaft on the mower via a cylinder. semi-mount hooks to the three point and also has two caster mounted wheel on a rockshaft on the mower. To lift, you raise the 3pt, then lower the wheels. ful mount is lifted completely off the ground by the 3 point hitch.

Steve: I'll try to answer your questions as clearly as I can.
1.Semi-mount; these are mounted to the tractor either at the rear axle housing, the drawbar, or the draft arms on a 3pt hitch. They also have a remote hydraulic cyl. to raise or lower the cutter bar, as in a sickle bar mower.

2. Lift type; full 3pt hitch mount with a linkage to the tractor that will raise the sickle bar higher.

3.Pull type; These are full trailer type of mower, either sickle bar or rotary. They also use a remote cyl. to raise or lower the cutter.

4. Mid mount; these are mowers that mount under the tractor, both rotary and sickle bar. This sickle bar is particularly useful for mowing fence rows, ditch banks etc.

Hope this clears things up for you. LE

Thank you Larry and thank you Jossette. I didn't realize there were hydraulics on the semi-mount and pull types.

this would be a semi mount MM UM-5 mower. Bolts right up to the drawbar.

A few old ones have a long hand lever & rod or chain to do the lifting.

Ah, the good old days.....

pull type is you pull it with a hitch pin and it trails behind the tractor.

semi mount is mounted right to the draw bar of the tractor and the bar will have some type of floating devise on it.

lift is three point mount.
