Plowed a small field today. Dad tought me how to plow when I was a kid, but I must have forgotten a few tricks. The last time I plowed this field I started at the center so this time I started at the sides. I used my Farmall C and a single bottom 14" little wonder plow. My ground is heavy and I seem to stand the furrows up not turn them over. I speeded up (2nd gear) and it seemed to do better. Should I have to go that fast? My main question is how to turn the last 2 or 3 furrows when starting at the sides of the field. My tractor straddles the unplowed ground and the plow does the same thing. I can't figure how to make those last furrows look good. Help. Thanks, Dave.

Thanks guys. After a couple of rounds with the disk it looks pretty good. Just never seems to look the same as when my old man was in charge.

There is a lot of art involved in getting plowing right. :) A 1-bottom mounted is especially the hardest to deal with.

With practice you will get it better, but as I said it sounds like you have it pretty good as is.

Faster is often better with plowing, up to 4.5 mph or so. If, you have the hp & are able to hang on of course. :)

Sounds like you didn't forget much. Your results are normal to me anyhow. :)

You will just have to play with it. How deep are you plowing? 6 -7 inches is plenty for a 14 inch plow. When you get to the center try raising or lowering one side or the other of the plow. You will just have to find what works best. Speed should not be an issue. The weight of the soil thould tip it over, but yes, sometimes a little more speed will help it along.

Finishing dead furrows with a single plow can be a bit tricky and may not look as 'neat' as you'd like. However, remember the purpose of plowing is to cover the ground cover and break the dirt not to make models for photography.
The last couple rounds may lead to cutting only a partial cut as the plow will try to slide to the left. Just keep at it. You can reverse a couple rounds to refill the 'ditch.'

My guess is you're plowing with a breaking plow. What you need to do to fill in the ditch is just reverse and throw the dirt back over. Your dad started in the middle by stepping off the field to locate the center, cause he knew water runs down hill.

Dave; If you plowed all in the same direction, you should come out ok...if you plowed from different directions from each end of the field, then you're gonna have a "dead furrow" where the two differnt directions meet or abut each other...it wouldn't hurt anything, so go for it ! Best of luck. Jim B.
