I found 18" chainsaws, a craftsman and a poulan from Lowe's, for about the same price. I won't use it a lot. Any opinions?

Craftsman use to actually be a Poulan in a new dress, I don't know if they still are? My first saw was a 12" Craftsman, it was pretty tough but I didn't let it cool down between refills cutting some big stuff & it locked up. Over the past 4-5 years I've bought nothing but Stihl, chainsaw,weedeater,blower/vac, nice equipment & you can't beat having a dealer to service it. When you buy somthing from Lowes... who will be there to fix it when you have a problem????

I have 2 chain saws from Sears. Both are made by Poulan. I have cut a lot of firewood with the big saw. It is a little heavy didn't mind it when I was younger. I'm 73 now. Now. Hal

Buy an ECHO. I've had a small 12 in. saw I think mod. 301? for 6 years. heat my father's and my house with it. It'll out cut anything I've ever seen. My brother came over with his Husk. Rancher, and after 5 min. put it away for the Echo. Last year I got a bigger- 520 Echo, and I have to pull up while cutting 'cause she bites so good. Neither EVER had a lick of problems cutting over 8 cord a year. Mike

I tried saving money with poulan and jonsered once but once you've used a stihl you don't mind paying more. ( ms 260 pro , 046 )

If it were me, I would be looking for a newer light professional saw. The Stihl MS361 is an excellent little saw. We've got the MS361, an 044, and an old 038 Super that just keeps going. Mind you the 44 and 38 are big heavy saws. The MS361 is a nice comfortable saw to work with. The old Stihl 034 wasn't bad either if it had the heavy chain, but I found I was forever chasing carb settings and one problem or another. A lot of the old light saws were not much good in my view. Also have an old Jonsered 510 which was a pain.
Husky also makes a very good saw. I think the 254 was one of their lighter pro models. Again, I think you would be better off spending a bit more money on a good used pro saw. They stand up better. I see those Poulan saws for sale in the Princess Auto surplus catalogues for a hundred bucks or so.... and I haven't heard anything good about them. They're just junk disposable saws from what I've heard. I don't have any first hand experience with them, and to be honest, I won't. Good luck with whatever you decide.

A friend of mine is in the surplus business.. he buys loads of surplus/ returned tools, fixes them & sells them... He tells me that Poulan & Craftsman are the same saw. I have even seen some saws he was selling, that were Craftsman, but had a few bright green Poulan parts he had used to replace missing or broken parts...

Bought one of the Poulans at Walmart few years ago and it's still going strong. I put a Oregon chain bar and chains on it so it will cut faster. The skip tooth Poulan chains are okay but not as fast cutting. Noticed later I could have got one just like it in the Craftsman with easy no tools chain bar tightener. Don't know how well those work but usually the Craftsman saws have more features and may come with a case. Wanted a Stihl but no more than I use a saw the Poulan works fine and always starts right up.

It depends on the amount of wood you cut. If you cut alot, I'd look into a stihl, Jonsered or an other non-throw away brand. The may be priced alot higher, but they run alot longer. I have a stihl 034 that my dad ran the heck out of and I'm still running it that way. Just blow out the air filter and keep the chains sharp. If you are just looking to trim a tree every now and then than the craftsman or poulan would be fine. I'd even be tempted to look for a good used Stihl, before I'd buy a new Poulan or Craftsman. Just my opinion. Good luck with your search.

I don't know about the Craftsman, but I have a Poulan which has a plastic case. I broke that case and had to replace it for about 60 bucks. I may have broke it myself by overtightening the blade bolts, but I thought it should be stronger than that. My next one will be metal.

Well I've got a 30 year old Poulan that has worn out three bars, don't even know how many chains and it still runs awesome. Our nine year old Husqvarna now, that saw is in the shop (again) even as I type this...
