Thanks to all for the ideas. It was upside down alright. I ground and pounded the sections all off and welded the busted bar back together and it runs pretty good. I only made a couple passes when duty called to fix my busted finish mower but it seems to work good. I did notice that if I don't keep the speed up it tends to wad up and get plugged. What I need is a manual for this beasty. Does anyone know where I can get my hands on an operating or maint manual? What is the big dial shaped disk that screws into the frame where the bar intersects the frame. It has a handle that seems to elevate the blade tip if you haul on it hard enough. Any explaination of how to set this thing?

Several combines have the sickle bar & sickles aranged as yours is. But typically a mower will have the knives on top of the bar.

Be sure there is a groove in the back of the guards for that bar to fit into before going through all the work.... There is no 100% all the time, and I don't think you gave us a mower model.

Can't flip it around as some suggest, the knives will be on upside down then, and the rivots will be in backweards as well.

like cowman says knock the blades off. DON'T use a grinder, put the sickle in a vise loosely supporting the bar only and hit the section you want to remove. this will shear the rivits and be alot easier to punch out

Yes, the sections need to be on TOP of the bar. Just knock them off and rerivet. But your gauards are in very bad shape, bent, worn, and I see at least one missing. It won't mow well that way. I'd recomend putting on all new gaurds too. Most everybody nowdays uses the double guards like for a haybine. They are a thowaway gaurd without replacable ledger plate.

He tried to link us to a picture, which _only_ allows a link to an actual picture (Like blah blah blah.jpg).

He _actually_ linked us to a web page (blah blah blah.html).

So, it won't show up as he linked it. Either he should use a pic name in the line he used, _or_ use the web page he linked to in the other, 'link' area.

One of his pics looks like this. I put the actual blahblahblah.jpg link into the image blank.

(Oh & I see he did give us a model #, I missed it in the subject line. D'oh.)

Or we can be linked to the page of pics by filling in the Optional Link & Link Title fields instead.

Can't mix & match as he tried to do, tho a common mistake.

The blades are lying correctly on the rockguards, But, the small bar runs under the blades and should rub against the mower big bar. I think you should take that sickle back to whom ever you bought it from and get your money back. That bar will not work and will require too much time replacing all the blades.

Good Luck..... .

When I got my mower (Case model 10), it came with 3 knives. Two of these were ok, the third one had the sections on "upside-down". I just took the "ball" end off and installed it on the other end (and moved the end section to the opposite end. It was way easier than removing/re-installing all the sections. Worked on mine, your's might be different, but it's worth a try.

Sections should be on top of the sickle bar.

It appears the bar is upside down. In order to flip thought all the section will have to be removed and fliped as well.

I didn't like the look of it but went ahead and put them on just like they were on there by the p.o. Ah well, I got rid of the home made pitman and the John deer ball socket arrangement. Just part of dealing with old stuff though. At least I only paid $150 for it. Those blades will come right off easy enough. I used a 9" grinder to remove the old sections so thats what the new ones are going to get. Where do you score a punch hard enough to drive out those stubborn rivets? I busted and bent every el cheapo I had and even managed to break a drill bit doing it last time. Not fun but at least its not cold ( yet ).

There is no picture here for me to see but after reading the replys, I think you can just remove the drive ball and put it on the other side.

Thus all sections will then be on the other side.

We use to reverse the sections and drive on the flat stock all the time to get more wear out of the bar.
