I have an opportunity to purchase a single gang pull 10" disc. Everything appears to be in functional but used condition. I"m primarily going to be using it to prepare the ground for pasture grass and a lawn around the house. I won"t be using it much. The guy selling it wants $75 for it. It seems to be a good price to me, but I don"t know much. Also, I realize being a single gang it will only throw soil out and not back in so I"ll either need to go over it twice, or grade it afterwards, which I"m willing to do. Is there something I should be aware of regarding single gang discs? Thanks,
David

Well I bought it. The disc I think had wood bearings at one time and have long since ceased to exist. How do I go about buying/making replacements?

If it's a single gang offset disk you can overlap each half pass as said or strike it at different angles till you get it worked down. Some single gang offset disks had the angle adjustable on the hitch and will work soil and trash better the more you angle it. With a one way tiller disk you go around and around CCW following the furrow always throwing the dirt out and can get high spots on outside edges if you don't level it right. Hitch on a oneway has to be adjusted right to pull right and cover furrow well and pull right behind different width tractors.

I read you as looking at a single disk with one side throwing each way, the front half of a tandem disc, if I am correct then they are designed to 1/2 lap each round to get away from that ridging. If it is what the other poster thinks then it will only make at the very first pass and only the first pass from the first blade a slight ridge that would smoth out unnotacible. would be like the first furrow of a moldboard plow and the dead furrow of that plow.

We call them one-way disks. Very popular back in the 50s and 60s. Now most people use the two gang disks; one cuts right one cuts left; called offset disk. For small areas nothing wrong with a good one-way disk; just go over the ground several times, then harrow or drag. Tom

Thanks, that"s what I was hoping for with regards to a reponse. I figure I can put a 3 point hitch on it if I want to later.
