Howard 40 500B

I'm thinking of buying a Howard 40" 500B rotovator but before I do I need to make sure my tractor can handle it. I have a Ford 8N. I haven't been able to find any information about the horsepower requirements of this rotovator. I've found the requirements for some of the newer Howard's but not this particular one. Anyone have any information that might help?

Not sure about that particular model but the rule of thumb I have always heard is 12-15 HP per foot, but that also depends on soil type. A granular soil will need less, sticky clay will need the 15. I once used my 84" Howard with wore out tines on an L35 Kubota and almost killed the tractor. 75 HP Leyland plays with it. Unless you have a Sherman under drive I doubt the 8N can go slow enough to work the ground properly. If you have loose soils then it might do OK, although you will be pushing the limit on HP. Also, without live PTO you will have to start the tines turning up in the air each time before you drop it in. Might get tricky to operate. YMMV.
