IH 2 bottom plow

I grew up farming with my dad and we had an H an M and a SMTA. I helped him plow a field in about 1966 and we used two and three bottom IH plows on rubber. Well I found one in real good shape and bought it for $150. My question is what do I have? It's IH for sure, it looks like the ones we used. It is two bottom, on rubber, manual lift and has the old trip style hitch that hooks to a clevis on the drawbar of the tractor. I have all of our old tractor and implement owner manuals, but nothing on this plow, I think my dad bought them used. Any I Idea what I have.

Gene: First question, where do you live? Does the plow have a rear tail wheel? If so, is that tail wheel fixed or does it caster and have a linkage going to the rockshaft of the left front wheel, which activates rear wheel in lifting and lowering back of plow? Same goes for those plows you and your dad were using back in 1966.

Back in 1966, the 3 bottom plow you were using would have had a castering lifting type tail wheel and could have been a No. 8 Tractor Plow, No. 8 Little Genius, No. 15 Little Genius. No. 16. No. 60 or a No. 70. Back then a 60 or a 70 would have been quite new as production of these only started in 1962. A No. 15 or a No. 70 are big clearence plows, designed to plow deep and plow down heavy trash like corn stalks.

The 2 bottom plows will not be a 15 or a 70 as they were only available 3 bottom or larger. However for 2 bottom you can add No. 4 Little Wonder to the list above. Little Wonder will be the plow with fixed or no tail wheel. All the others will have the castering lift type tail wheel. The 60 and 70 are post 1960 plows, while all the rest are pre 1960 plows. The No. 4 and No. 8 go all the way back to 1928, however rubber tires did not come until 1940.

I looked and the plow does have a linkage from the tail wheel that helps lift the plow. The main lift is on the left wheel and is of the mechanical type. Rubber tires all around. I didn't measure the shears, but I suppose the are 14". How are those measured by the way? From the rear all the way to the point?

Any way I guess from what you say it is a little genius.

Gene: The plow will be a Little Genius. Whether plow is 12" 14" or 16" is width of cut. You measure this from center to center of beams. I should qualify that as not all plows can be measured that way. Technically you should run a straight edge along land side of back bottom, and measure perpendicular across to landside of the front bottom. That gives you true width of cut.

Most IH plows you can measure center to center on top of beams. I think it is John Deere that has some offset beams and there the straight edge system would come into play.

#8, Little Genius IHC Plow is probably what you have if you used a similar Model back in 1966, they were Mfg. much before that date but some people I knew were still using them then.Rubber tires and Clutch lift is a giveaway to it's identity.They mostly got parked when the later number series ,460-560 etc. with "Fast Hitch" became popular.

I live in Central Missouri. The plows I would have used in the 60's were by no way new then. Seems like the 3 bottom had a hydraulic lift but I dont think it was factory, My uncles were real tinkerers and I think they may have helped my dad rig one up.

The plow I just bought is on rubber, with a rubber tail wheel and I believe there is some sort of linkage there, I'll have to look here afterwhile when I get to the farm.
