I have a Dearborn model 14-15. The pitman assembly is made out of a piece of wood; it keeps breaking within a minute of the PTO starting. Is the pitman assembly supposed to be steel or wood? I have manual that I got off the internet, it looks like it is steel. Does anyone have a solution on how to get it to stop breaking the wood bars? Or where I would be able to get a steel one? Any Help would be great.

my 14-15 mower (project) has a steel tube for a pitman. it looks pretty simple to fab a replacement.there"s a lot of info on set up and adjustments in the manual. i suspect the others were right about a bind somewhere. good luck.

Wood. It is meant to break if something is wrong. Dad & now I've been running a 501 & a number something like yours for 30 years, & have not replaced a wood pitman yet on either.

Something is wrong with your sickle. It is binding up on something. Rivot or bolt head, hold down clip, bent knife or bent guard. One end or the other hitting on something.

100% something is wrong other than the pitman stick on your mower.

Off hand I cannot remember model numbers BUT the older Dearborn mowers ALL used STEEL pitmans, don't know about the model that later was renumbered the 501. The Steel pitman mowers had the ball for knife connection on the end of the pitman shaft while wood pitmans have the ball on the knife head. I hane 4 Dearborn mowers here to restore some day and they all have the steel pitman and it is not replace able properly with wood
