Hey fellas, I'm looking at baling some hay. I've got a chance to get a deere 14t baler. What are some pros and cons of this thing? thanks for the help.

Really good comments and advice from everyone else , so as for my two cents this is what I have found over the last two seasons with a 14T . Keep the knives sharp ! And get the plunger in the case as snug as possible without binding anywhere in it's travel . I haven't had any problems with my knotters so don't have much to say on that . Also getting the windrow sized right for the tractor you are using is somewhat of an art I'm finding out . It's not really critical but the right size windrow makes a better bale and doesn't shear as many bolts as too big does . To small and the bales aren't as uniform . I have used my 1755D Oliver ( IPTO ) and my IH M ( regular pto ) . Both do good but need different sized windrows . The 1st speed on the M has proven to fast for my baler in windrows that the Oliver can handle ( the Oliver can move much slower if needed ) , so for the M windrows must be made smaller ( For MY baler ) . Also make sure the pitman bushings are tight and the knotters tie and the rest is a piece of cake . Good luck ...Randy

We bale with a 14T extensively and have gotten great service out of it. RN has hit the nail on the head in his reply. I've baled with it behind both H and M IH's with good results. Parts availability is good and when set up correctly make nice bales. If at all possible, see if you can make a few bales with it to try it out. They have a good reputation.

Here's a sample of some 14T bales from a month or so ago.

The only con(not the baler's fault)is if it weren't stored inside.If the bill-hooks get rusty;it won't tie.This goes for all balers.
We still use a 14T on 23 acres of alfalfa and can't complain.Nice straight tight bales.Simple to work on,parts are available. ~brad

My neighbor has a 24T and he bales 80 acres of alfalpha every year. 8 to 10,000 bales a year and it just keeps going. Had a problem with the knotter a while back but it still goes.

Good old baler when they are working right an a pain in the butt when they aren't. Biggest problem is with the knotters but thats true on all balers that have knotters. If you do buy it the first thing you should do is go to a JD dealer and get the owner manaul or you will have problems. That baler was made from around 1956 till around 1962 give or take a year or 2.

14T on old farm- most parts available as needed, fairly reliable, good snug bales. Not a large, fast, highcapacity baler- not recommended for 100 acres of 4 swath windrows. Brothers used it for 5 to 20 acres of mixed hay behind H or 350D IHC, sometimes behind B JD. Was adjusted for small, snug 40-50 lb bales-popular for horse owners to handle, brothers customers liked the size. A 25 hp tractor can handle it dropping bales on ground for later pickup or a 560D will handle it pulling racks when you can get a full crew of 5 or 6 people together. A 5 acre field can be handled by 1 person in a couple evening, weekends, 2 is better. Customers willing to pick up bales in field rarely work. RN

I got a 24T that is a little newer version. And it has been great. A friend GAVE it to me for a favor I did, spent $350 on it at the dealer's shop, baled 1200 bales with it this season and never missed a knot!
