Somebody tell me about a Vermeer 504 Super G?

There is one of these coming up on an old farm auction week after next. Nobody around here runs Vermeers. I myself have a really good Hesston 5500 that is like brand new condition and I am not going to part with it. There are times though I would like to make a 4x5 bale, and I'd sometimes like to be able to bale with my smaller tractor (42 HP) and not my big tractor (130 HP). I am thinking it won't bring much money, and if I am correct about that I may buy it? How heavy and tight a bale will it make? Bale quality compared to my Hesston 5500? What is one of these bugers really worth?

well i start by saying i don't know anything about the 504 G. but this year i bought a new vermeer 5400 rebel baler and it has been the best investment i have ever made. it rolls tight rolls and the roll go between 1200 and 1400 lb i personaly think vermeer is the best equipment you can buy

No problem if you are short on HP with a 504G baler. The Main drive sprocket is a 13 tooth you can change this sprocket to a 12 or 11 tooth sprocket if you are short on power. We actually have some 36 HP tractors pulling these balers in mountainous conditions. The bale quality will not suffer if you slow the baler down.

Good to know. I am going to see it tomorrow to see if it is a basket case or what? I really don't think it'll bring much. The auction isn't till the 6th of september. I'll report what happens.

The 504G is an open throat baler. It uses springs and hyd. density. You can vary the hyd. density. Value is around 3-4K depending on condition. Maybe less if it looks tough. I am not familar with the hesston but this baler will make a tight bale, not quite as tight as the new ones but tight. Just like any round baler the better you pack the sides the tight the bale will be.

The 504G and Super 504G are tight core balers and will make a good dense bale. I think the factory recomends 52 hp min for that baler. I have a MF 1440 which is the same as a 504G and have had good results.
I don't have any experience with the Hesston balers, Around here they bring a lot less than the Vermeers. A lot depends on where you are and the dealer support.

I don't have any pictures, But I have roller bales of bermuda that I had a hard time putting a spike into.

What kind of bale weight are you seeing out of these machines? I'd expect around 1200lbs plus or minus 100lbs?

That's about right. I think you will find the Vermeer to be a better built baler than the Hesston. Bigger shafts, with heavier bearings. I'm not saying that the Hesston balers don't work, its just that they are made cheaper than the Vermeer.
