Well could you? I need a hay wagon or three and am a better welder than a carpenter. I was thinking since I have some scrap steel tubing and a neibor down the road who has a steel yard I maybe would build the frame out of steel and just use luber for the floor? Or maybe even use treadplate and make it all steel? Would it be too heavy?

You could provided your fields are really flat-otherwise you will get no give (twist) to put the load on all the tires and are putting load and weight on the opposite tires/side. You increase the chance for getting stuck, slipping a tire off a rim, extra wear on the hub and possibly tipping. Just something to consider.

I can not remember where I have seen them, but there are factory built steel hay wagon racks now available, seems like they use the expanded metal for the decking and a powder coat paint job.

Yep, I agree all the newer racks in this area are steel, but most still have a wood floor.

YES! I have one that is all steel. Rack is an old truck rack. 24ft long and has boiler plate for a deck. I've never had problems with it being slippery.

third party image

Dad made this frame out of steel in about 1964 and the wood is the same age.

6 or 8 inch channel for the stringers we have one of each.

3" cross channels and 1"x12"x16foot long boards.

Best rack I've ever seen built.

have not seen a new wood one for years, all we have in this area is steel for almost a couple decades now, rectangular tube (8 or 10') for the sills depending on length, heavy guage expanded metal for the floor, lets the chaff fall through and not as slippery as deck plate, that stuff is slick as snot after it gets polished by all those bales

Expanded metal floor? I'da never thought of that. That me be all right? It would allow air up through the bottom for better drying? I'd think you may have to put crossmembers closer though wouldn't you?

Nother Idea? I have a whole huge stack of untreated pine 1"x6"s in various lenth's, and I tell you I have a hell of a pile. Don't know what I'll ever do with it? If a guy was to use those and put some sort of sealer or treatment on them would they last? I know I got enough of those for at least two or three wagons. If I could use those boards, with some scrap steel for the deck frames I may be able to make some decent old wagons for not a lot of dough.

Now, I just gotta find some wagon gears?

I'm probably going to be the odd one out by the time this thread concludes..... but I can't see why you WOULDN'T build it from steel. It will be lighter, stronger, and will outlast you.
The wagons I've built use 10" "I" beams for the main beams, and 2"x2"x1/8" HSS spaced at 2' for the cross members. I hen run a 2"x2"x1/4" angle down the length of each side to tie it all together. Mine are just open racks for round bales, but I throw 2" plank between the cross members for square bales. Another one just gets a temporary sheet of 1/4" plate for squares, and another has 2" plank, bolted on permanently for a deck. That's now rotten, and when it comes off, it's steel that's going back on.
If I was buying steel to make another rack, I would use 10" channel for the main beams, and 3"x1.5" channel for the cross members. HSS is simply too expensive, and no stronger in that application. If you've got scrap steel, that's just groovy.... Go for it!

Well, I gotta find some wagon gears and I think I am gonna try one out of steel. Steel with good paint will hold up better outside anyhow?

I don't see why you couldn't build it out of steel, don't think there are any rules against it. Putting luber on the floor might make it kind of slippery, though ;)

I'd think real hard about a steel floor - smooth is going to be deadly if your shoe is wet. Perf floor would be heck to drag bales across. I'd maybe not want a steel floor myself. The luber is a good in between material. ;)

But the rest, I'd go with steel if you want, should work just fine.

Flat steel floor is awful to walk on, a bucket of paint mixed with sandblasting sand applied once every so often helps. Doesn't last long when you do it to a dump truck bed though.
