Figuring our trailer manufacturer from VIN?

Is it possible to figure out who made a trailer from the VIN? I have a flatbed tandem trailer that I got in a tractor deal. I would like to put brakes on it but I think it would be lots easier if I knew who made it. Seems like the first part of the VIN might be the key but simple google searches didn't find anything.

The VIN is 4JMFS1526W....

Any tips on where to look for electric brake parts or how to rig them up would be appreciated too. I am pretty handy but new to tractors and trailers.

Maybe I don't really need to know the manufacturer. The tag with the VIN has had the upper part cut off. Its a stick on label so I don't think it has been moved to a different trailer. The upper part might have had the manufacturers name?

Jim It really doesn't matter what brand the trailer is.

You need to know want brand and size the axles are.

Look for a tag on the axles or on the drum itself.

Dexter made a lot of trailer axles and you can get parts from several sources.

A good trailer supply shop can tell the axle from spring measurements and bolt pattern on the hub.

THe 4JMFSXXXXX The 4 probley is the Type/Model,
JMFS the Manufacture/Builder ,& the rest of the number Ser # . but they probely can't tell you what brakes they used on that trailer check drums some times they have name on them also you might take drum & shoes to local Trailer /Boat if you don't have brakes on axles find axle rating will be 2000 lb , 3500 lb & etc check with < northern Tool.com > go to (Trailer + parts) look there you might find the brakes you need , Just guessing you probley have 3500 axles . Good luck in finding what you need .
