I made up a new driveshaft for my sickle bar mower with a 7' cutter bar. I used series 6 PTO parts to build it but now that that I have it all done, I was wondering if I should have gone heavier? I am using it on an Oliver 66 with about 30 PTO HP.
Any suggestions??

Also make sure you keep the telescoping part of the shaft lubed good and make sure it can change length enough that when you are going through a "dip" while mowingthat you don't knock the front bearing out of the PTO gear box on the tractor. Questions?

Leroy has you on the right track. Now pardon me for being stupid, but what is a #6 PTO shaft size wise? I am used to old Spicer and Blood brothers shafts and they do not go by numbers like that. Also items of that nature are rated in torque capacity not horse power. That is why a 600 horse power truck needs a different size shaft than a 600 horse power race car. Questions?

John,
The series 6 driveshaft has a rectangular shaft that is 3/4 X 7/8. Tube end O.D. is 1" X 1.125".
You can also check out this link: www.drive-lines.com
Look under AG shafts, then under domestic. It lists series 6, 12, 14 and 35.

20HP rated parts would have been enough, you only need about 5HP to run that mower
