Anyone have experience with both? I often need to cut large fields of weeds back and I need a 7-8 ft wide cutter to do so. Large used Hogs are hard to find so i was wondering if a flail would work. Do they chop up and better?
thanks

I've never used a bush hog but I've cut a lot of brush with a John Deere 15A flail mower. I used my JD 420 crawler in first gear (real slow) and by pulling the steering levers back to stop have live power. I took the spout off and opened the back over the auger. One thing I liked was that you weren't running over the stuff you were cutting after the first pass, altho it did take more room to get between trees, etc.

Charley,
I have both: an ancient 5' Brillion rotary and an equally old 5' Brady flail. I used them to cut very old, heavy sage brush here in SW Colorado. The flail does a great job-chops into splinters and seems to pick up debris close to the ground that the rotary just can't get. Only trouble is that it takes much more power than the rotary. I'm using it behind a WD45 which is too fast, even in low, and is about 15 HP short of what the flail really needs. Still, it does get the job done.

There are several types of flail cutters: Mine has the heavy, 1/4" steel "wing" which clubs more than cuts. That's ideal for the dry, woody material I'm chopping. The other are much thinner and lighter (and probably much sharper) wings that I would think would be better for green weeds and light stems-never tried one of those though.

Depends on the flail drum and which blades it has on it. They can be set up to cut "golf course" fine, chop corn stalks, cut hay, or mow 4" saplings. Flails are also a bit expensive new, but last a good long time. When one is set up for heavy chopping it will give a "cordoroy" look to grass, and set up for fine mowing it won't deal with heavy cover.
A "bush hog" type rotary mower will cut most anything that a tractor can get over. The quality of cut will be determined mostly by the blade's speed and sharpness.
GENERALLY a 25 horse tractor will handle a 5' rotary or a 8 to 10 ft. flail. When buying a used flail you need to learn what to look for in terms of blade count, blade length, and design. Don't depend on the seller to know what it is set up to do. A flail-properly set up for the job at hand-will make you throw rocks at a rotary, but misapplied the same mower will have you considering suicide.
And yes I have used both to make a living.
