The local New Holland dealer had a used half-shaft for my manure spreader. They gleefully charged me $175 CDN for it. I haven't been back.

The last I checked, most of that type of bar was 10-15 bucks a foot, and the yolks and cross would run under 15 bucks each. So, you could spend 60-90 bucks on a new shaft, or probably pay 20, plus 30 bucks freight on a used shaft of unknown quality. I guess if you find a good deal on a used one, that's just peachy. That said, I wouldn't hold my breath on that. Good luck.

Would you believe I have the same exact problem.
I friend gave me an old Dearborn SBM a couple of months back.
It is missing the half of the PTO shaft that connects to the tractor.
Also missing the mounting brackets and special sway bar.
I saw some PTO shafts at TSC that I believe will work.
But I didn't get a chance to measure anything yet.
And I do remember the half shafts were pricey.

Try your farm supply type stores also. Like TSC, Fleet Farm etc. They stock this stuff also.

Make sure that you have the size right. Some of those shafts are timed and the square is actually a rectangle. Measure it both ways.

You can go to an equipment dealer and they will custom make you any shaft you need. I don't know if any dealer will do it, but my local Agco dealer is the place to go for something like that, they keep the square stock on hand, and they have the ends on the shelf, and they will measure up what you need and make it in their repair shop.

You priced it?. It really shouldn't be all outlandish for just the piece you need, and with todays high shipping prices, you problably won't be saving too much. Had to buy one for a 3pt hitch rototiller we bought that it turned out the shaft was missing, and it had to be special hardened components, the whole complete shaft (both ends) cost $120, and the dealer let us have it at their cost since we had bought it from them at their auction and it was believed that one came with it, but turned out it didn't, so since you only need half of it and it problably isn't special hardened steel, it will cost less than a tank of gas for your pickup today. Nothing's free you know!.

ya know...i asked a simple question... in reply to Jonfarmer, 08-18-2006 19:28:26
some people save junk parts thinking they will have a use for them some day and if a neighbor needs it they either trade or sell it for a honorarium...i been farming/ranching all my life and my family has been in agriculture since the early 1800's in Texas...if i ask for a certain part be assured i've checked the local parts suppliers first...i can offer some first hand advice to ya...if youre gonna survive farming/ranching these days you cant go buy new everytime ya need something...i WILL find a shaft at a price i'm willing to pay...its obvious you either dont have or not willing to part with one so as far as i'm concerned our conversation on the subject is closed.

Can't wait to see how many positive response you get with an attitude like that. Seems to me the guy was just trying to help. Not everyone asking questions on here is as savvy about farming as you are.
