I think that's pretty average... The litle bit of hay on in the machine is fine, as long as it's not constantly going over the reel in short stuff. Our 9' New Idea 290 does that sometimes, but it's basically just a swamp cutter now because we've got a slightly newer 14' hydra-swing machine now for the alfalfa. I actually just used the 290 today in a swamp after replacing about 9-10 guards that were bent or busted. I put on some used ones and bought 7 new ones, only to have 1 of the new ones not work because the sickle slot wasn't deep enough to let the section move. It would bottom out and wedge tight... Then I found 3 more guards that were damaged but I only had 2 more good used ones so I just had to use the best of the worse. Got it together though. Overall it still works great but we stumbled upon the other machine this spring and it was a great deal. I should go look at our parts machine and see how the reel was set on that one, because it used to run pretty good... before the frame ripped in half... in the same swamp I cut today...
