Any suggestions as to what to do or,how to adjust my old platform swather? It is leaving clumps of hay instead of nice uniform windrows.
It is set so the back stripper is close to the auger, and the bottom of the auger is ~3/4" above the lower stripper.
Model #215a JD platform auger. It is old but still usable and all I can afford for what little I have. The motor has been rebuilt as has the pick-up reel bats, and fingers. The cutting bar and blades appear to be in ok condition. thx all jcee

Thx. guys much appreciated. I guess the proper name for the machine would be a self-propelled windrower, sorry for the cornfusion. I'll try lowering the auger to ~1/4" off the bottom stripper, to see if that helps. The material is definately bunching up before the auger can grab it and move it along. All the guards and cutters appear to be in good shape, though, the bar has a slight bend forward on the right side, the reel is adjusted to the rear and for a late release. Fingers and bats have been re-done and replaced as needed(replaced all the bats and painted them white even. looks pretty good while the reel is turning through the field). The material is definately bunching up before the auger catches it and moves it along. Bad for drying! I have found that cutting at a faster speed does help. But thickness of the hay means slowing down to prevent overload on the auger? Looking at re-doing the rusted head panels when I rotate from the hay. Will try to post pics. Thx again jcee colo.

Even feeding starts at the cutterbar. Are some guards/sections broken, bent, etc.? Material bunching on the bar, not being pulled off evenly by the reel? Broken/missing fingers on the reel? Reel set too high, not correct fore/aft position?Light material, driving too slow, auger might need to be set lower- bunch needs to develop before the auger can push it along? Without knowing what the manual recommends, it just sounds like 3/4 inch clearance is excessive.

Some mfrs made swathers in auger and draper table versions. Auger table is common in areas where no small grains are grown and swathed- and then there is no canvas to maintain. More positive feed of material to the center hole.

I'm not familar with the 215 you mention but does it have rubber crimper rollers or the old metal type? Check bearings, sprockets, and chains for wear on crimper rollers and make sure the chain isn't off and has the rollers out of time or they work against each other making a terrible noise and bunchy windrows like you describe. Old floppy chains and worn sprockets don't let the rollers work well either even with new bearings.

Sorry, I didn't mention that it doesn't have any type of conditioner. All the auger has is the center flights to discharge the hay. Should I invest in the manufacturing of a conditioner? From my understanding there were some of these with the conditioner optional, for high crops. Is hay considered a high crop? As of yet I have not talked to anyone familiar with this machine. Makes a guy wonder how old it really is. lol Thx jcee
