JD 35 Chopper Gear Box Problems

We have a JD 35 chopper. Was working fine at the end of the field. Shut it off, lined up for the next 2 rows and nothing on the head would turn. Messed with the reverser lever for the gear box and still no go. Anyone been through this problem on one of these? Thanks

How does one go about getting that gear box off/apart?? Do we have to pull the gear box off by unbolting and slding forward? We could not get that knuckle apart that you would normally unbolt for sharpening knives. I know it has to be simple but we are an IH family, so this whole JD thing gets annoying sometimes. ;-). Thanks for the help!!

I wouldn't tear into the gearbox without looking for a shear pin in the drive system going to the head. Gehl uses a sprocket connected to a hub with a quarter inch shear bolt. Likely that JD is similar.Run the machine at idle and see where the power stops advancing. Operator manual should indicate where all shear pins are, as well as recommended bolt strength- usually Grade 2.

Mine quit on me a couple of years ago and ended up taking the gearbox apart, and a pin through one of the gears was sheared off. There is also a large roller chain in there. Replaced all the needle bearings, think total cost was around $100 to rebuild it. Ended up buying a 3950 the next year figuring no more problems and had to do repairs on that one also, so none of them are bullet proof, although sharpening knives and setting up the cutter bar is a whole lot nicer on the 3950. No, I haven't. I have an old JD #6 that the pto would turn but the head would't. Off the gearbox is the shaft that drives the head, it had a shear pin that broke. You should be so lucky.
