i recently restored pa's jd #5 sickle mower to cout along the waterways. i put new sections and rockguards on it. the waterway grass keeps balling up on the sickle unless i have the sickle set up almost all the way in the front. the guards are sitting about 4" or so above the ground. just dont look right. am i missing something here? been 20 or 30 years since it was used last and i cant rember if it was set that high

sickle mowers are not too good if there is too much moisture. even dew will cause it to ball up.

the bar should sit on the ground, the sole for the outer shoe will determine how high it sits off the ground. Most of them are 2" high.

Waterway grass is way to heavy and full of moisture to mow unless it has been really dry and 100 degrees for 2 or 3 weeks. mowing ditches are no different than mowing your lawn. the dryer the better.

When you say waterway grass, what does that mean? A lot of moisture down in the area where you are cutting is going to cause you trouble.
Just a thought.

It would be best to get an owners manual. You can probably get one from John Deere.
You need to:
1. Register the knife. The knife is registered if the sections center in the guards when the pitman is at the inner or outer end of its stroke.
2. Cutter bar lead. The outer end of a 7' bar should lead the innner end by about 1-3/4" to 2".
3. Section to ledger plate shear contact. Bend guards up or down to align the ledger plate to the sickle section.
4. Also check wear plates and knife holders.
