When to replace sickle guards

I have a JD 450 Sickle mower. Really like it-I use it in some pretty tough conditions. It started not cutting so well last fall so I just replaced all the sections-quite a cutting machine now!

It is obvious when to replace sickle sections...but my question is how do you know when to replace the guards? I am assuming they get dull and eventually need replaced-or do they last forever?

some folks have took a angle grinder and squared the edge to get a little more use out of them. Just look at the side where the knife section is and see if the edge of the guard is rounding over. need a clean edge like a sissor.I just replaced mine, and they were about 11 bucks a peice. But they were mis matched over the years. Guess they used what they had on hand.

Allan is right...that ledger plate is half of your scissor. What you need to look at on the guards is the outside of that plate. Since that is where the cutting action is at, you will see th outside of that plate start to slope off. The price of guards can add up, so do a close inspection and replace what needs replacin'. You will be impressed at how it cuts with good guards.

Obviously bent, broken or damaged must be replaced. Even if all that is wrong is the flap over the top of sickle is bent up or missing. What the others say about the ledger plates is important. Some brands of sections have replacable ledger plates, others do not, or are difficult to replace. Another thing that is important is to have the gards positioned so sickle just clears the ledger plate. Bent the hold downs with a few blows of the hammer to force sickle bar down. Make sure all gards are even and straight. You may be able to adjust them with a hammer too.

mower guards have ledger plates that are right below the section. This is the other part of the sissor action. If they get to worn down you will get a raged cut. These are replaceable,
