can someone tell me what size of chain fits on the drive gear of a mccormick ground driven corn binder. mine is missing its chain, and tried a #67 flat chain, but the links seemed a little long and it keeps jumping off the gear after a few revolutions.
thanks

The drive chain is a No. 55. I scanned a couple of the pages that show the chain and emailed them to you. As I still haven't learned to up photos to this site. I could also take some pictures of the chain tomorrow if you want me to. Later Byron

I sent the pictures to Cowman, sorry I did not see a way of attaching them to and email to Ohio Farmall.

How about some 72 chain? The links are just a little shorter than 67 if these pictures are actual size.

one of the first i tried was the drive chain off of my wheat binder, it was marked 72.5 and some links were marked "D". it didn't want to fit either. i think i've tried every size i found in my dad's old chains between 45 and the 72 off my binder. the closest thing i have found to fit is the 67, but if looked at closely can tell it isn't quite right either, then it climbs off when you try run the binder. u wouldn't happen to know what the dimensions of the links are on a type "M" chain, so i could look around and see if i find anything close?
thanks

No, I've got catalogs from back in the 50s. I can find A D & S but no M. I do know that the 72 1/2 is shorter than the 72. I also found a 76 1/2 that is close to the 72. What length link do you think you need?

tried the 55 drive chain and it wouldn"t fit either. the drive gear is stamped with part number CA523. i don"t know if possibly different drives were used on these at different times. it looks like there could possibly be a little blue paint on the outside of the drive wheel, not sure if it is original paint or not. but could mean it is possibly between 1927 and 1936, according to the international paint committee decisions.
thanks

Humm, That sprocket fits the old vertical binder built 1899-1924
That book calls for 32 links, type "M" chain.
I have some old chain, I'll take a look see tomorrow.

i'm not sure what size of links i need, but when i measured between the cogs on the gear it was approximately 1 1/2" at the bottom and 1 7/8" at the top. i'm not sure if there is a way to figure out link size by measuring the gear. thanks for checking around for me, i will try the link from the other site. you've been a big help, now at least i know what type of chain to look for, and the date range when my binder was made. thanks again.

The book calls for 55 or 55HD in a couple places but hard to tell which drive is which.
