John Deere Running Gear Question

Hello all. Thank you in advance for the help.

I am the proud owner of an older JD running gear. It is either a model 953 or 963. It has the extended axles with the JD logo inscribed on the hexagonal ends and a six bolt pattern. I have read the previous posts and I think it is a 963 based on bolt pattern and what I have read. The spindle assembly part number is S32890 and the king pin supports are S-3167-D.

I am in the process of disassebling the unit for restoration and paint. I am stumped as to how to disassemble the hubs to repack the axle bearings. These are the extended axles with the JD Logo. I do not see a seam where the logo "caps" would seperate from the rest of the hub. I have the 963 operator's manual, but it is issue D1 that covers the newer design that uses standard bearing caps. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mark

Sounds like you have a 953 gear. Yes, the caps unscrew CCW.

Don't know for sure on yours but many earlier hubs had cast threaded caps on them. Get hold of cap end with some large channel locks or pipe wrench and try turning CCW, counterclockwise to loosen.

Success! Thank you.

My difficulty came in the fact that I could not see the split between the two castings and I was afraid to really apply a lot of pressure. It appears that three of four caps had either never been removed or the hubs had been repainted as paint came off with the caps. The grease had turned back to just about solid clay. Amazingly the bearings are in good condition. Obviously this gear has not been used in a while.

Thanks again for your help.

Mark
