Im in the market for a new sickle bar mower. I have an old JD model 39, but its just about to give up the ghost: its just not worth fixing.

I went to JD dealer, he is pushing me towards a Frontier model SB1107 (an 81 bar) at a cost of $3,375. It is belt driven and cuts horizontal and vertical.

It will be used on a JD 5310 tractor (55 HP), with a three point hitch.

I need something that will cut horizontal and vertical and will cut a one inch plus tree branch.

Anyone have any suggestions as to what is the best seven foot (Plus or minus) sickle bar mower that is reasonable in costs. This will be the last sickle mower I will buy, so hopefully itll last 10 to 20 years. I mostly cut coastal Bermuda and ditch/pond banks. I would like ability to cut back trees at field edges (reason for the vertical cut) I will not do this very often.

TKS,

A man that thinks like I do you just need a mower to mow around fields & ponds . Be sure to get belt driven one that will mow at different angles 90 deg up & 45 deg down . That sounds like
a good price on mower I have priced them from $3500 to $8200 localy . Used 451 in this area sell for about $1700 .

three point rotory blade. well worth the money. works like a lawn mower and even cuts the bigger tree sprouts and lays everything down like a bar mower. no plugging up and you just turn around in the ditch and cut where you just were. no messing around

Not exactly new but I have a JD 450 that is pretty bulletproof. 1" would be about the max I would want to cut of anything.

I have never done any vertical cutting till this year-trimming back brush around field. Worked fine.

I would recommend the New Holland 451. These are still being made and parts are easy to get and easy to work on. I run two and I have an uncle that runs three of these sickles, all 9 ft. The John Deere 350 you can still get parts but these are not in production anymore. Just my two cents.

I am a rare guy in these parts, because i still like to cut grass hay with a sickle mower. It is slower but they cut cleaner and use almost no horsepower compared to a disc mower. Getting one set up right to cut smoothly is a bit of an art. Read the manual and experiment. You'll get better every time you cut. Remember how you had it set so you are not starting over every time. Angle of the blade, tip up of the blade and tractor RPM's and speed are all important too. spend 5 minutes with an angle grinder touching up the blades every morning you mow, that will help a lot...but that is a bit of an art too.

As for mowers,

JD 350
NH 451 or 452 or MF dynamic-balance mowers M31 or M41

are all well respected.

Around here they rarely bring more than $750.
Often less.

Good luck.

I would look for a used John deere 350 Most late model sickle bars have not been used that much as a rule since most farmers use mocos now.Saw a like new 9' Deere sell for $2,100 this spring. Lots of them will only bring $1,300-$1,500 today.

I bought a JD-350 this spring for $900. There was some paint still on the 9' bar! It's my first sickle mower, but seems to work good.
