After readiny hay problems, i know just how ya'll feel. for years my great uncle bailed my hay for a percentage. his health is not as good and his equipment is pretty neglected. So i had my neighbor bale it for the same deal as my uncle. this year he really stuck it to me. finally after he pulled off my fields for the second time i had enough. got some of the old equipment out and called my cousin and uncle for help.we got it done and now i am going to need a round bailer for next year.

My biggest problem is money(lack of). My largest tractor is a AC 170 diesel. rated around 48 horse. what size bailer am i looking at for it to handle. i usually have bales 4x5 and like that size to feed and handle. I have an old JD square bailer but i don't want to haul it. We have bailed as many as 480 rounds, but it has been less the last 2 years as we have been dry.too many square for me to handle.

Available good small round balers on a budget. Given your situation and of 400+ bales a year and budget, I'd recomend the following balers.

Hesston 530, 5530- ($2000-4500) 540, 5540,($3000-5500)

John Deere 330,335- ($3,000-6,000) stay away from the 510 & 410 balers they are closed throat.

Vermeer 504F,G,H- ($2,000-4,500) 504I & Super I- ($4,000-$7,500) MF1440- same as Vermeer 504G

New Idea- 484 (1,500-4,000) & other models the same as Hesston

M&W 4500- $2,000-4,500

New Holland 848- last of the chain balers but a good baler- $2,000-4,500

New Holland 630, 634- $3,000-5,000

There are some other good balers in your price range but because their market numbers are so small you might never see a good one of them used.

hopefully next year i can buy a good used one. just too strapped this year. just made 263 this year due to 2 dry years in a row.didn;t even have mud in the winter.

was looking at the vermeer 5400 last night on the net and i think my tractor could handle one in that size. of your list does any of them compare to it? I have several fields with hill sides.

Yes you can handle the Vermeer Rebel 5400. That is the current model since 1999.

I understand it is the same as the Krone baler. M&W makes it. It is now part of the Alamo group. You can get part at Agco. I am close to a Krone dealer who say he can still get me parts. It is a fixed chamber baler. Some people don't like a fixed chamber. but it works well for me. I paid a little under $2000 for mine about three years ago. That was an exceptional price compared to what a lot of others for sale at the time. Just look at overall condition rust worn cahins and sprockets. The plastic container for the chain oiler was around thirty bucks. But sprockets and chains are the main thing and they can be had at most hard ware stores and parts counters.
