Great baler, only weakness is a narrow pickup and short tongue which sometimes will require you to drive on the windrow if you have a big tractor.

Check the ball bearings on the plunger and pickup. Check for rust holes where the feeder forks push the hay into the chamber.

Most parts are still available. $1150 sounds a bit high, but if it is in good shape and ready to go it is probably worth it.

We have baled just over 7000 with our 270 so far this year with no trouble and just a few missed knots. I saved ours from the torch a few years ago and with about $700 in parts and some time in the shop, we now have a reliable baler for very little $$$.

Good luck,
Scott

We sold and serviced so many of those balers. They
worked well and had a good reputation. Just remember they are 43 years old, so depends how
they were cared for. $1150 sounds high to me.
Maybe if outstanding-rebuilt-guaranteed ? Chuck

I grew up on the farm with a 270! We baled around 4,000 - 5,000 bales a year. Very few problems. If You bale straw behind a combine with more than a 15" header You probably cant go slow enough to keep the pickup from choking up full! We tried it with a 15", or 16" combine, & had to stop sometimes even in 1st gear. We cut hay with a NH 489 9" 3" cut haybine, & could generally run the baler between 3.5 - 5.2 mph. I personally wouldnt hesitate to own another if I didnt have more than a few thousand bales to put up a year!!!

I just bought a good condition, working NH 270 baler a few days ago at auction for $320CAN. I was told that was less than half the price it should have went for. I was also told they are a good, reliable baler. Hope this helps.
