thanks to Doug got a manual for NH276 and just fitted new plunger bearings a ok and really grateful for the manual Doug.But beware all buying bearings in the uk is an expensive thing to do!! 50 pounds sterling plus vat each for the 2 bigger ones on the knife and 30 +vat for the others- anyway while doing the job thought i would see how the safety latch worked-rotated the fly wheel after engaging knotters and needle yoke did the full cycle but no movement from latch mechanism--should it move - i dont know -can any one help with an exlanation.Many thanks in anticipation.

thanks-it looks like a seized pivot( too much grease!)--so do i take it that the latch should go in EACH time the needles go in the chamber i.e continually working while baling?

If the latch on your 276 looks like it did on the Super 69 we had, it should have a spring that pulls the latch into the bale chamber. When the needles move out of the chamber, the needle yoke pulls the latch out of the chamber. Maybe the spring is missing.

Don't run the baler without the latch working. You think bearings are expensive. One little slip-up, Knoter drive shear pin, chain drive etc. fails and your neadles are history big time.

As the needle yoke moves the first couple inches, the needle latch linkage allows the latch spring to pull the needle latch into the path of the plunger crank arm. The crank arm should have just passed by the latch when this happens. If the needle to plunger timing is correct, by the time the crank arm comes around to the needle latch again, the tie cycle is complete, the needle yoke and knotters are "home" and the latch has been pulled out of the path of the plunger crank arm. Check for a broken/missing needle latch spring and/or a siezed pivot on the needle latch itself.
