It sounds like pcy1066 bought one that was abused. I've had a 504G for 20 years and has given me few problems. Whoever had it before me must have had problems because of the graffiti on it. It was obvious they did not know how to adjust or run the baler. They apparntly never greased the pickup either.
Belts can run $800 to replace. Bearings around $25-30 ea.

We have had a 605G for a lot of years (20) and have custom baled with it every year. They are good balers, but like any other peice of equipment can be abused. Like was stated earlier, check the chains, gear box and bearings. Also check the belts at the lacing. If it has been stoored outside a lot, the belts may be shot.

It is and open throat baler that makes up to a 6' in diameter by 5' wide. You can stop and tie the bale off at any diameter you wish. Things to check are wear in the pickup tine bars, gearbox, belts and bearings. If you do purchase the baler call Vermeer and they will send you an operators manual for free. That way you can adjust it. They are a good baler just remember that they are older
