I live in south eastern Pa and an amish neighbor pulls a NI 5209 discbine with his horses. Has a diesel engine on the discbine (volkswagon rabbit maybe?)

Here in the southwest corner of wisconsin is a growing community of Amish. Alot of them are from PA. WE have 3 next doors neighbors now. They are talking all the time of buying more farms or land to farm. I rent pasutre land from the one to our west. He was a machinist back east. His brother is a tractor mechanic there yet. We get along great both of us are just dirt farmers. What gets me though is whent hey come to my barn to watch me milk the old way. We still us surge milkers and a milk conveyor system. Most of them around here run a small engine to power the bulk cooler and refill the big 1000gal air tanks. Much of there stuff is ran off air. I get to see them in the feilds with rigs like that all the time. Up north in WI by cashton they still use sulky plow and such, not as modern as these folks around me. Bob

I've heard from a good source that up in Flemingsburg Ky there are some Amish that run a JD 14 or 24 with a Wisconsin on it. They have a team of horses that is 8 a breast and over 16ft wide, when they come to a gate they don't un-hook or stop, just keep on going....Must be a sight

My wife sold a pressure canner to an Amish lady in PA. She said she had to get someone to drive her down here, so I told her I would deliver it to her. She gave my wife fresh baked bread for bringing it up. I did notice a young man with 3 head of horses pulling a rotary mower with a Wisconsin engine. He was mowing off corn stalks.

Saw a similar setup here in Michigan. Portable engine on 2 wheel cart drawing a JD 14T Baler. Team of horses pulled the cart. Must have been a real trick to follow the windrow with that setup! (All steel wheels!)

I've seen this in Northern Missouri near where my wife is from. I figure that if you're gonna be Amish, then BE AMISH. If you want to use modern equipment, then don't claim to be Amish and do something oddball like this. Most of the stuff you see is for show anymore. Went to the Amish bakery in Jamesport MO. The Amish girl behind the counter told me she really loved the Cheddar Cheese/Jalapeno bread "right out of the microwave". Give me a break!

There's several branchs ot "Amish". Some allow more modern stuff than others. Might want to research stuff a little before passing judgement.

As I said in an earlier post "every sect has it's own rules". I know they are different, but the ones I have been around are for show.

Being Amish isn't about using old technology.

As I understand it, the basic principle is an effort to keep their "communities" close and insulated.

That's why rubber wheels are usually not seen -- to easy to be tempted to move away when it's easier to travel to see someone.

And it's the source of prohibition on wires attaching you to the outside world (phones, electrical).

With plenty of variations and nuances and everything else as their are opinions on this board :)

If they have the manpower available to run the teams, and the land to grow their own food...I'd have to believe the teams are cheaper to buy and run then an equivelant tractor.

It depends - every sect has it's own set of rules. There is even an Amish gentleman that sells riding lawn mowers. Several of the Sect buy them. They cannot PERSONALLY own one but thier BUSINESS can! There are also more phone lines and electical lines going to barns and out buildngs than you know. Also - if they are RENTING the equipment, or house, then they can use the "modern" ways. They are intitled to believe what they want, just like anyone else, but they have a LOT of loopholes to get around things. Most of what I have seen is for show. Your experience might be different.

I want to see the gismo they built to move the big round bales, or do you think they just drag them to where ever they want them?

These pictures were taken in Ohio. We have a large Amish population in SE PA in Lancaster county. They've had to make chnges in order to ship milk. Had to have milk coolers installed and generators since they don't use the electricity that passes in front of their farms.
This was needed for their milkers too.

I bet those mules don't lift those bales. Hal

The cost of farm land in Lancaster county PA has skyrocketed and there's isn't much farm land for sale. They are now buying farms in MD in southern Cecil county about 60 miles from me.
Then they hire someone to drive them back up to
PA for Church or visiting relatives. Hal

That's a very good picture of the bale spear. The Amish are very ingenuous at making just about anything. They're excellent wood craftsman too. Hal
