I just picked one up cheap. Owner (in his 90's) said he bought it right after the was (WWII) were these any good, or bad? He kinda had a tear in his eye when I pulled out with it. Said it was his "Pride and Joy". What color should it be repainted. I want to refurbish all the equipment i purchased from him.

The Wards running gears were most likely made by Electric Wheel from WW2 through the mid 70's. You should be able to interchange parts from a lot of different brands - Sears, etc. Ususally the steering arms and the tie-rod took a beating. But they can be straightened and with a little work the toe-in can be set up to get it to trail like it is supposed to. Bearings and wheels should be easy to find. A good shop should be able to replace bent spindles. Just make sure that the box is secured to only one of the axles. The other axle must be able to float. If you don't, you'll bend a spindle.

hi guys. i am 63 years old. all of the wards wagon gears I have seen, the low load ones, were red with white pin stipes on the axle housings with white wheels. i have seen a couple of them with green wheels. I have seen quite a few on our club auction near Marshalltown Ia. used to be a big wards store in Marshalltown. just saw one of those wards wood flair boxes not long ago at the Carroll Ia. auction I go to all the time. charley.

I've got two of them under homemade barge boxes. My dad and uncle bought them new and made the boxes. For the first several years they dumped them with an A frame and hydraulic jack, lots of work but easier than shoveling them off. Later they installed hydraulic hoists. I'll have to take a look tomorrow but I think they are a dull red color with pinstripes. They also have the dull green wheels that Allan mentioned. The steering is well woren but overall they have stood up well considering the thousands of tons of square hay bales, ear corn, oats, logs and any number of things they have transported over the years.

I restored one this winter. It is a wards gear with a wards hoist and wards varnished flair box. If you want I can e-mail you a pic. There is also a picture of it in the YT implement gallery

During ww2 6.00x16 tires were hard to get for car's so some guys bought MW gears, put the tires on their car's and parked the gear until tires were available! Not all MW's were lo-loads, some had a drop spindles, they trail decent if in good shape, an old Electric look's top be the same

Theres a picture of one on equipmentlocator.com.

Tried to bring it over here but wouldn't upload.

Has the colors I mentioned below.

The rear right tire is the correct color.

Mornin Allan

Yeah I thought about the fade part after I read your post but I still think the one we had when I was a kid was orange.

It would've been about 10 years old at the time.

And I know it had green pin stripes.

How did you get that picture over here?

Gary

I downloaded it to my machine, worked it over, resized it and then saved it as a jpg. Then I put it on another server so it would load here.

Yeah, they weren't "in your face red" like a Farmall color and certainly did have a bit of an orange overtone.

Hi Dave,

My dad bought two of those running gears in the very early fifties. Good ol' wagons with everyday run of the mill automotive ball bearings in the hubs.

They were painted all red with some white pin-striping across the outside face of the axles. Wheels were painted a dull green color. Kind of an Oliver tractor type green.

Do you remember what they cost new? Probably around $150?

Some of the Wards gears from the 40's had straight roller bearings instead of the automotive type bearings. Years ago my Uncle (Passed away many year ago) had one with the straight roller bearings that went bad, he found a piece of pipe the same size as the bearing and put that in and worked for years. He did't do road travel tho.

Dave most Montgomery Ward gears I've seen are a lite orange almost peach colored with green pin stripes.

The rims were green also.

Green was just a lighter green than Oliver green.

Hope this helps.

Gary
