Best guards?

I purchased an ac 80 this year and it came with what I think are called 'stone guards'. Whatever they are called, they do not have a ledger plate, or at least a replaceable one, and it is not serrated like I am used to. The mower I had previously - an old international with a pitman stick - was nothing but trouble, but would really cut when it was working. In the same conditions I could cut in second high on the old mf 35 with the international compared to 1st high with the ac - any more speed and it would start to miss and plug.

Could the difference in part be to the guards? (Yes, both had sharp teeth, and there was actually more play between the sections and guards on the international.) What type of guards are best (I am cutting mostly heavy 'grass hay').

Thanks,

Kari

What type of sickle sections does each mower have on it? Non-, top-, or bottom serrated?

Bottom serrated has always worked pretty good in mixed hay for me.
