New Holland 411 Discbine 1000 to 540

This is probably a really stupid question on my part but I figured I would ask before I went and bought something. I'm looking at a 411 Discbine that is for sale. The only issue is the mower is 1000 and all the old Ollies I would pull it with is 540 only. How hard would it be to convert to 540 if it is even possible. Thanks

Which Oliver do you have I have a 1650 and you can run 540 or 1000 pto

What size is this mower? What models are your Ollies? If I remember right, I think you can even convert some of the 3-digit models to 1000 rpm, but you"d have to ask on the Ollie board.

It takes a lot of guts to run a good size discbine...

Why should a discbine take so much power, compared to a moco? Bought a nine foot NI5209 in 1990. used it on the 4430 and 4240, sold it to my son who pulls it fine with his 3020.

Discbine's take a lot of power because they have a lot of weight tied up in high speed moving parts. Also consider that most discbines's weight in at close to 2 ton for a 9' model. That's a lot of weight to drag around, and that takes power. He may run the 5209 OK with a 3020, but if he gets in a real heavy wet crop, or on a steep hill, the 3020 is apt to be very lacking. I've got a 9'9" Deere 1460 which will work a 100 hp tractor on a hill. I can run it fine with 70 hp most of the time, but to really maintain 5.5-6 mph where I like to cut, it wants 85+ hp.

Yes, the front gearbox can be turned around and you will have 540. However, the front yoke on the PTO will need to be changed to a 540 yoke. Please do not use an adaptor. Steve

1411's and 1412's have a reversible front gearbox. Every 1000RPM 411 I have ever seen had a short shaft between the primary and secondary PTO shafts. 540 RPM 411's have a step up gearbox.

There is no front gearbox on a 100RPM 411; it is direct drive. The 540 version has a step up gearbox mounted between the primary and secondary PTO shafts. You would need to buy and install this gearbox and swap out the primary PTO shaft with the heavier 540 shaft with the correct tractor end yoke.

I think all you have to do is turn the front gearbox around to change from 1000 to 540 or vice-versa. ( the gearbox near the front up near the tractor) I had a 411 set up for 1000 & it worked so well that way that I never switched it- but the book said to reverse that front gearbox to switch PTO speeds.
